Hello, Just wondeirng if anyone has an opinion on the Remington 597? I'm just looking for an inexpensive, reliable .22 semi auto for plinking etc. Thanks for the advice!

i love it. i have a heavy barrel one. it is a fun gun
pros:
1.even with a heavy barrel,it is still not too heavy
2.hit a 4*8 inch steel plate 100yd easy with a 40$ 4x40 scope from amazon.
3.cleanning is easy too
4.cheap price
5. banana magazine! and this is the main reason i chose it over 10/22
cons:
1.no lube out of box. need some basic oil on the two spring guides to aviod jam.
2.its 10rd mag is hard to pull. can not free drop.
3.and its banana mag is harder to pull. when load full it will jam. i always load 25rds only. most of time,no problem.

BIG YES!!!
I"m able to hit 12Ga hull at 100 Yds time after time with my heavy barrelled 597.
Cheap 9X scope and Federal Champion ammo.

I had extraction issues, throw a voltquartsen extractor in it and your golden. Mine has the threaded barrel, had no problems puttingna full mag on a 3" steel target at 110yds using American Eagle. Bought it for a chicken gun.

Had a Marlin 795, spent more time un-jamming it then shooting it. Had a Rem. 597, horrible trigger and serious extraction / jamming issues, but better than the Marlin. Got a Ruger SR-22, horrible trigger also, changed the trigger & extractor and reliable as heck, never jams. Simpler action and easier to dissassemble and maintain than the Rem. Would never go back to the 597. :stirthepot2:

My wife's Remington 597 is wonderful. Accurate, rarely jams (not anymore than any other well functioning 22lr). No upgrades.
Don't overtighten the two bolt guide rods when cleaning....common mistake that makes it not function well.
The early 597's had some issues, but seemed to be all corrected by 3rd year of production if I recall.

Stock is one of the nicer 22lr stocks for adults (vs small Ruger basic stock or small Marlin 597 stock).

Also, Rem 597 mags are relatively easy to load vs Marlin (not sure on A22).

GIANT PIECE OF SH*T! NOT RECOMMENDED

Mine cant shoot a complete magazine with out jamming at least twice and with some ammo impossible to fire 2 round strait.

Return to distributor, then to factory (or repair center???), come back several months later, still the same problems, send again now for several weeks.....
When it finally come back the said they change the complete bolt plus some parts of the trigger systems, was working but not with all ammo....

But damage was done, the trust on this gun (and company) was lost.

Those problems could have beed avoided with a 2 minutes test fire before leaving factory, Obviously I was the first to shoot it...

I get rid of it I buy a 10/22 instead. It digest every single round of any brand i put in it, never have any jams using facory magazine, but after market magazine is another story it greatly depend of witch brand

I inherited one from a family member a few years ago and it has sat in my safe untouched until last week. It is the synthetic stock one with what ever cheap scope it came with from Remington. I am not a rifle shooter, strictly IPSC handgun stuff but wanted to do something for fun with all the extra time at home of late. A buddy who shoots some long range stuff offered to take me out and show me the ropes.

I sighted in the gun at 50 yards and then we made MOA elevation adjustments for the 100 yard target. It was a breezy day with a decent quartering crosswind so I adjusted the hold to the left edge of the plate. 3 mags 30/30 on the 4x6 steel target easily, which kind of shocked me since like I said I don't shoot rifle. Moved to 200 yards, made the elevation MOA adjustments and then worked off the hold to adjust for the cross wind, took probably 20 rounds to figure out the hold for windage but once done I went 26 of 30 from 200 yards. Then we moved to 270 yards, the max we had and the 8x8 plate. I ran out of elevation adjustment on the scope and it took a good 30 rounds to figure out both the hold over and windage holds but once I had a spot I managed 16 of 30 at 270 yards. This was all shot with bulk Federal Auto Match.

I was super impressed and my buddy who has more rifle experience seemed to think that was pretty decent for a semi auto 22 and bulk ammo. Overall that day I likely went through close to a brick of .22lr between target shooting and gophers and the gun never hiccuped once, no misfires, jams nothing.

So based on my experience I would highly recommend.

I got my VQ extractor from Sylvester sports in Alta. Took a couple months since they were out. Put a stock one in while I waited and it started having issues right out the door. Most people with the VQ extractor have almost zero issues after, some just have a lemon and theres no saving it. Its like that with any gun though imo.
