Love my 597 in archangel stock but the low profile sliding magazine release sucks.
Has anyone else come up with an idea to modify it?

Just fabricating a larger sliding release is not going to work because then it won't fit/slide in the stock anymore.

Perhaps a different button or lever on the bottom in front of the trigger guard?
Could not really find anything online, just a lot more people who dislike the factory release..

I’ve been working on an extended mag release handle for the 597. A major hurdle on the 597 is that in order to remove the barreled action from the stock the mag release lever need to be small enough to pass through the stock opening, basically it can be no larger than the stock piece. I came up with a 2 piece version. I replicated the factory release except with a flat surface where the serrated grip is on the factory piece. I made a half round handle that indexes over the flat part and is held in place by a single 4-40 X ¼” screw. The pictures show the 2 parts held together with a bright finish zinc plated screw as that was all I had on hand. I have ordered some socket head screws with a black oxide finish to match the rest of the parts.

This is the stock part. The hole is for a 1/16" roll pin that keeps it from falling out.

Milling machine required

Drilling hole for roll pin

Making the half round part

Drilled and tapped 4-40 hole and counterbored for recessed screw head.

The second one I made has a taller half round knob.

Blued and installed. It is very user friendly even wearing gloves.

Thank you John for posting this.,

I came to the same conclusion that it must be build in a 2 piece construction to get it to slide through the stock.

Mine lives in an archangel stock so it won't be taken out of the stock much anyway because it is a bit too much work to do :)

Nice knurl job there. Unfortunately not within my capabilities. I think I will just drill and tap it and screw a small cilinder onto it.

regarding your zinc plated screw; you can dip the head in muriatic acid to dissolve the zinc and then use cold blue to color match it.

Found this quite interesting and as i have 597 and the machinery i'm going to give a go. Took out the mag release and started to take measurements and was wondering if could provide what you came up with. I used Vernier calipers and a mike when i could.

This side view drawing shows the factory dimensions. I changed the dimensions of my base to a single thickness of .135" to provide plenty of thickness for the threads.

I also changed the side view offset to allow the screw hole to be far enough from the edge and allow it to pass through without interfering with the upright part.

well, after giving it a bit more thought I finally got mine done :)

It's a completely different design than John's.

From some bits and pieces that I had laying around I made a hook plate that slides on the factory pin above the mag release lever and hooks in the same place the factory slide button hooks onto.
The hex lever screws in the nut that is soldered on the hook plate once the action is back in the stock.

I did have to make one small adjustment to the stock since the lever swings slightly upwards when operated I had to file the slot in the stock a tiny bit higher in one spot.

My machining skills are not like John's as you can see lol.
But I like the look and it works soo much better than the factory one, especially with the wider bottom on the archangel stock.
I have left the lever a bit long so I can see how it goes with gloves, can always trim it a bit later on.

Good idea using the pin as a pivot!
