Looks like a new 597 variant from Remington. Any idea how this rifle stands against the ever elusive Ruger 10/22. Aftermarket parts wise, not as many as a 10/22. I hope to find a side folding collapsible stock similar to ATI.

They have them at lebaron in Mississauga for $205 plus remmington has a $25 rebate you can send away for.

I have one and its a good shooter. It has double guide rods and a last shot bolt hold open which is cool. It also has a very heavy barrel on the regular model compared to the ruger. I got a couple 30 round mags for it that work well. Archangel makes a pretty cool tactical stock for it.

I have never shot the 597 but heard both good and bad reviews. But I have own several 10/22's and they are all flawless. They eat pretty anything you give em.

you should read the post about the spent casing not discharging. Flawless?
it is a nice gun but nothing is flawless. oh wait im a savage guy hahaha
im going to get hammered by the pro ruger guys for that
But you are right I bought a savage 64 and sold it due to being garbage, replaced it with a 597 which is a good shooter. For half the price of a ruger

I finally saw the one from LeBaron Mississauga. My only concern is how the bolt was designed. Looks like it will fall apart after few cycles. And the magazine was really cheaply made. Don't get me wrong, this is still in my wishlist. I am just weighing in the pros and cons. At this point, Ruger 10/22 still beats 597 by virtue of build quality.
The only thing is, you have to wait, wait, wait.... chase if you can find it. I also saw a Marlin Model 60 tubular magazine. Looks more solid than the Remington 597. It looks like it weighs heavier than the 597 HB version. The only downside is the loading. A box mag is easier to load than the tubular. My late dad used to have a similar tube mag but on bolt action. It is still running good. Any thoughts on this Marlin Model 60?

Never used one sorry. Really a bolt gun should run forever. I had my basic 597 at the range yesterday and just destroyed the bulseye at 100 yards. With the new 10 rd mags the 597 is tough to beat for 200 brand new. The 30 rd mags are garbage and no aftermarket that I have seen.

I bought an OD synthetic 16" bull barrelled 597 last week....love it!...haven't used the factory mag yet though, I bought three 30rd Remington banana mags and have been having a ball with them. I've heard bad reviews of the hi cap Remingtion mags, but it seems to be only the clear plastic version that is giving hiccups...apparently the black polymer mags run well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again if you are having trouble with your 30rd mags try sanding them down a bit I've found that if they are tight to put in and need more than a slight touch to drop out then they usually don't function properly due to not being fully seated. I have both clear and black 30rd mags and after a little sanding they both work great.

I just sold a regular 597 --- 20 inch barrel & open sights ---planning to buy the heavy barrel 16 inch in the near future. I am hoping that it shoots as well as my 597VTR(same 16" barrel , I think). Both of my 597's have fed rounds as well as my Ruger SR22--- both with stock and extended Remington mags (clear). The VTR is VERY accurate ---one hole groups @ 50yds .
The SR22 is accurate-- but not quite as good as the VTR. I also like the last shot bolt hold open on the 597's(which the Ruger does not have). I like the 10/22 tactical with the Hogue stock as well , but is it worth more than twice the price of the 597HB? --- P.S. My VTR is the one with the A2 (fixed ) stock.

I had the grey stocked standard length 597 and loved it so I bought the heavy barrel model from Cabela's. This one is great too. I currently own two 10-22's, a Marlin model 60, a Cooey model 64B and the HB 597. The 597 is the best shooter of the bunch of semi's I own so I decided to upgrade it to a Boyds stock. It is a joy to shoot and is super reliable.

How would you compare the 597 HB against Marlin Model 60? I found 597 HB charging handle a little loose. It rattles as you pull to chamber a round. It might be odd to the unit I saw yesterday. But comparing to a Marlin Model 60, Marlin 60 is built more solidly. I have not shot any of these, so don't get me wrong. Again, this might be odd on the units I saw yesterday. I like the 597 HB, then dress-up using the Archangel 556 kit. The only downfall if I would go to Marlin Model 60, there is no upgrade at all. Reliability wise, maybe you can vouch for what have you seen so far. Also, who has the better trigger pull out of the box?

My Marlin 60 is super reliable but the trigger sucked big time. I spent a lot of time making mods to the trigger from instructions I got from the Marlin thread on Rimfire Central but it is only marginally better. The 597 trigger also sucked from new but was easily made better with the addition of a Volquartsen target hammer (bought at Milarm in Edmonton). As for accuracy between the 2 rifles I can't really tell you which is better as I have never mounted a scope on the Marlin. The 597 is super accurate.

597 owner here too, outstanding performer, right out of the box it was bang on at 100, but I had to go through three of them at Bass Pro to find one without machining debris in the chamber.

I just picked up a Marlin 60 a week ago and love it.It took a while to find the best ammo for it since you are not supposed to shoot hyper velocity out of it because of the plastic recoil buffer.I can now set up 5 empty 22 and 17 hmr brass at 50 yds and nail them about 50% of the time using cci mini mags and the cheap Simmons 22 mag scope I have on it.About the only ammo it does not cycle well is winchester.Where I got the gun the owner said he had never had a complaints about the marlin he had sold but had a few about the 597.You can have problems with any gun,be it marlin, remington, ruger or whatever.

I own, or have owned all of the mentioned (my 597 isn't heavy barreled) rifles.

Love Marlins. Won't say anything against them. Function well, outsold Rugers for decades, but you don't see too many used, That means something. Accurate, affordable, and well deserved reputation. If I had to find a flaw, it would be a chunky front sight.

Am really impressed with my 597. I have read/heard a few tales of woe, but never suffered any. Dual guide rods n' heavy bolt make for a silky operation. Very Accurate (I'd go toe to toe with a Marlin), affordable. Full sized rifle too. If you like hi-cap magazines they are available.

I adore my 64's. I'm biased...my first .22 was a 64 (mine over 26 years now). These used to be very affordable, but now fall in same price range of the Marlins n' Remington. Basically same rifle in production for 50+years means something. Made in Canada. As much as I like 'em, I'm frugal and if buying a new one would look closer at the Marlin or Remington (Last time I saw all three together the Savage was most expensive).

I'm not a 10/22 fan. I understand many are, and won't deny there is a huge collection of folks who like to use aftermarket parts. Not my game. Basic rifle most expensive of the 4, and I can't wrap my head around that. My 10/22 experiences were negative, and I don't tolerate 'em on the premises now. There do seem to be quite a few fans for 'em though.

Best thing would be to handle all of 'em (and others too) to get a feel of what you like. Try and get your hands on some older, no longer in production rifles too. I hate sounding like my Grandfather....they don't make 'em like they used to!
