Decided I want one, but I can't find a retailer that has one in stock to save my life. I've found a few sources for the regular heavy barrel, but I think the threaded barrel might be nice to have. Anyone got any leads?

Don't really care if it's camo, but I'd really like that threaded barrel. I did find one retailer that had the regular hb with a scope combo, so that is one option.

For the heck of it, I contacted Remington. Got a reply (quickly I might add and on a Sunday!). They aren't making any more this year. Dagnabbit.

FYI the heavy barrel and scope combo typically comes with the longer barrel, may want to be sure before you buy if you're looking for the short 16" version

By the way, I have the 16" hb 597 and it's a great rifle

Your correct. Most of the combos I found are the 20" medium barrel. I did find one vendor that has the 20" combo and the 16" HB combo.

Have you done anything to yours? How's the accuracy? I have heard lots of good things, but a first hand account is always good.

Haven't done much with it other than scope and cleaned up the rods inside. Shoots very well and cycles all ammo good with the 10 round mag. Cci ammo in the 30 round mag shoots very good as well, no problems. Some cheap stuff causes some issues in the large magazine but it's more ammo related than rifle.

I really like the 597 and the 16" hb version is excellent.

Accuracy is also good especially with some quality sk ammo.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Got a 16" hb with vq hammer and extractor (best mods you can do) and its a tack driver. With jsut basic ammo its accurate as all hell. Cant wait to put some high end ammo in it. I love how compact it is with the 16" barrel yet it feels liek a full sized rifle which the 10/22 and others never felt like to me.

Now just a thought, since you seam to be able to do precession work (the Hatsan choke build you are doing), why not just do a threading job on the 16" barrel. I mean there is a lot of material up there to thread so might be a idea.

Unfortunately, I possess the knowledge, but not the tools for barrel threading. I really need to start saving money for a lathe. So many creations in my head...
