Remington 597 info help please "newbie"

Have a a few .22's and found a 597 at the show here this weekend. I know there are some loading issues with this firearm as I have been trying to read up on it. The seller received the gun from his friend and knows nothing about it.. So I am hoping you guys might be able to give me some insight into what a decent offer might be to put on it as they are $260 new at cabelas.

What should I look for, what questions should I ask? It will be my first potentially used firearm purchase... So I am just looking for a bit of help in direction!
 
185$ check the mags, is the metal covered in scale. The early rifles had mag followers that were the same size as the groove on the mag body, it would bind. The newer mags have a follower key narrower than the mag groove. All rifles should have the bolt rails polished torqued as per the instructions on Rimfire Central.com. I have one, it works just fine but it is tinkers rifle, torquing, polishing mag grooves, polishing bolt rails.
 
Not to debolish the last post, but i bought my wife one of the early ones. We did initially had all kinds of troubles, misifres, fail to eject, rough trigger, almost to the point of cutting it into peices. As a last ditch attempt, i completely tore it apart, amd what i found was surprising. Unlike most remingtons, the back end of the action (slide, bolt, spring, trigger group) was coated in heavy goop, which had become mired with unburnt powder, grit and whatnot. A can of brake clean and WD later, it is not even close to being the same rifle.

Using factory mags, i dont believe we've had a single issue since in easily 1000+ rounds. Well, maybe one misfire, but a firm primer strike on a dud shell, but still. Its went from being hated to my second favorite .22 to shoot. Henry first.
 
A 597 was my first firearm. It was the stainless version. I found it to be very accurate. The 30 round mags were tempermental but the factory 10 rounders were flawless. I sold it because I wanted a 10/22. Then I shot a 10/22 and wished I still had the 597. The guide rods can cause a lot issues if they are over tightened. I never had any problems though
 
One mag, no scope. Seller doesn't know any history on the firearm. Came from an old friend who passed away.
 
I heard back from the Calgary seller. He still has his with scope for $150! Good price? Are there any questions I should ask?
 
It's now my only .22
I sold both my 10/22's, S&B 20 and old cooey after taking it out to the bush the first time.
Very accurate, very cheap, very simple and for me has been very reliable. No feeding issues at all with the standard 10 round mags. Eats any ammo I have shot in it, even .22 Short!
The single and best upgrade you can get for it is a set of the Tech Sights. Increase the sight radius x2 and with an AR15 A2 adjustable rear sight and a tapered front post target site you will really see how accurate they are.
I can hit pop cans at 50 meters every shot from the prone with the tech sights and bulk ammo if I paint them bright enough to see them lol
I know the early models had some bugs. The new ones are great. I actually put a little bearing grease on the bolt rails at the rear where the springs are to keep it going and going!
Outstanding rifles and highly under rated/appreciated in my opinion.
OP I would definitely jump on it for $150 with the scope! Great deal!
