remington 597 info

I have the basic 597 with iron sights that I bought a few weeks ago and ran about 500 rounds. Accuracy has been phenomenal! Reliability has been very good also. I had a couple FTF but that was more the magazine (30rounds). The 10 round no issues.

The only thing you have to watch is when you are cleaning it. The two screws that old the guide rods can not be very tight. The rods will bend and the gun will malfunction alot.

Other then that super fun to shoot! :ar15:

I love mine. Accurate, cheap, cycles like a champ, and full sized. Heavy bolt on 2 guide rails is a nifty innovation. If you're in the mood, hi-cap magazines are available. Too

Many folks have suggested cycling issues...I've only experienced that with one of my 10rd mags. Remedied by sanding the follower. Otherwise, runs like a top. I did pony up for the weaver base (12$'s), but won't pretend it's mandatory...

For cost vs. fun...a very hard rifle to beat. Honestly, for new, affordable .22's, it seems to be 597 vs. Marlin 795.

The one I had cycled well with CCI Blazer, but the accuracy was very poor and limited the gun to about 20 yards for a 1 inch group with any type of ammo.

There are lot more better options then a 597.

^^ Than you didnt try different ammo to find the good stuff.

I took my VTR 597 out today for the first time. I had FTE's in the beginning but as the gun and magazines got cycled it got better and better to the point that after 100 rounds or so i could empty the entire 30 round mags without any issues.

friend noted that the gun was a tack driver, much better than his 10/22. The weak point was the nut behind the stock.

We brought 6 guns with us today and by far the VTR got used the most. 600 or so rounds went through her and it was great. I love it!

Actually, yes I did. I tried every kind of ammo I could get my hands on. The CCI Blazer was the best performing. Both my Ruger SR22 and Savage 64 are far superior in terms of accuracy then the Remington ever was. The Savage (the gun that replaced the 597) was shooting half inch groups at 50 yards on its first trip to the range.

Took mine back to the store after a week. It was a real Jam-o-matic, another customer showed up to return his while I was being assisted. The clerk told me 1/4 were being returned. Might have just been the model I picked but If I don't trust a gun it can't stay in my collection

I find the triggers way too stiff, even with aftermarket volq gear, it was too difficult to get tight groups.

It's also a giant PITA to strip and put the rifle back together, because of the dual guide rods / springs. The 30 round mags are also all garbage.

I don't recommend the 597.

If they don't work well you just have to tune the guide rod screws. It's a 5min job, my buddy did it and it was his first time ever taking apart any type of gun.

As for being a pain to clean, I can give it that- the guide rods were tricky to get back in, but mine's been running better and better ever since I stopped cleaning it so it hasn't really been an issue for me :D

^^ I found the same thing. I bought the gun used and did a thorough cleaning paying attention not to overtighten the rod screws.

First few mags the gun was really bad with tons of FTE's. By the end of the box of ammo it was shooting better and better with few if any FTE or stovepipes.
