They seem reasonably priced ($175 localy) and I like the look of the gun. But are they any good? how do they compare to other under $200 (new) .22LR rifles. Any known/common problems with these guns?

btw is it worth to spend $300 and get a leminated model with a scope?

thanks

Jam-o-matic and picky about ammo, but pretty accurate for a semi .22
Jams on waxed bullets like mini-mags or PMC Zappers, but the same Zappers will do a 1" at 100 yards.

For a plinker I'd advise a 10/22. For precision, mod the 10/22 or buy a bolt-action.

I bought one as my first purchase (not counting the guns I transferred from my Dad once he let his FAC expire and didn't want to get a POL) and if I had it to do over again I would have bought a 10/22.

That said, I was able to work it up to the point that it reliably feeds anything I throw at it, ejects away from my face (when I first got it I'd get hot brass in the forehead or off the scope about 1 in 3 shots), and drives tacks (for an autoloader anyways).

My cousin has a 10/22 that did all of this out of the box, and was FAR more accessorizable for individual tastes.

I have one in 22 Mag and it came with plastic mags which were crap, I replaced them with the new metal mags which were about $18.00 each and it works great now.

Agreed on the metal mags for the .22 LR variant as well - this is an absolute MUST!

I went from lock/load-fire-fire-jam-fire-jam-fire-jam-fire-fire-jam-fire-fire-jam-fire-fire when using the plastic mags to only two jams out of ten when using the metal mags. A little work on the breech end of things and I got it to feed nicely with the metal mags - and it was STILL a donkey with the plastic mags even after all this work.

I had one, worked fine no complaints on function at all. But, with 10 round only mags it got boring - I now have a 10/22crr :)

With that said, best thing is the last shot hold open feature (the 10/22's lack this), it's also very accurate (at least mine was) and of course the price.

Cons, magazine capacity 10rnds max and because it's built tighter IMO it's more prone to jamming up when dirty so they need to be cleaned more often (500rnds'ish - being that .22lr ammunition is so dirty to begin with).

But no mechanical problems with the design - it's good (I had the metal mags).

My buddy bought a laminate stock 22.mag version, the bolt broke the first time we had it out........they look nice, but I don't think I would ever buy one.

Buy a 10/22 and throw a thousand bucks in accessories on it to make it shoot!! Then buy a Honda Civic, and put a big-ass tailpipe on it!!!!!!!! Be like everyone else!!!!!!

Just like lemmings I tell ya.......

I have a 597 LS/HB in .17....top notch gun. (And for the record, I am not on a budget and can own pretty much anything) The 597 looks better, is more accurate than and costs less than the 10/22. There were (past tense) problems with the plastic mags, but that was rectified long ago. As far as the capacity issue: there are now high-cap 597 mags on the market....try "google"

Okay rifle now that the magazine issues have been addressed. I like the laminate stock and much prefer it to the standard hardwood.

For my money though, I'd go with a 10/22 if you're looking for a plinker, or if looking for a "match" semi-auto, the T/C Classic Benchmark...all steel receiver, 18" heavy bull barrel and tight match chamber. Keep it clean and it runs like a top, shoot it dirty and it jams, but boy is it ever accurate. IMHO, what the 10/22T was supposed to be! My stock T/C heavy barrel regularly shoots the pants off several tricked out $1000+ Ruger 10/22 target guns.

IMO 10/22 is kinda ugly (like most Rugers) and costs more $$ I'm sure it's a more solid gun though... but for some reason I have a problem spending a lot of money on a rimfile. I was thinking of something under $200 (the Remington after tax will be a couple quarters under :) )

From a useage point it makes more sence to spend the money on an good rimfire that could see a few thousand rounds a year as rather than a biggame gun that will see at most a few hundred though likly under 100. For trigger time alone a good 22 is worth the money.

I had the same questions as you did IM LUGGER , but i finally made my choice with a Remington 597 , and i could not be happier. My friends has a 10/22, which initially got peaked my interest into .22 , and even my friend prefers handling my 597. I was reluctant about buying my 597 after an exhausting search on numerous forums of it having jam problems, but as long as your 597 is manufactured with the past 3 years and comes with the new metal mags you should have no problems. I have had no malfunction other then having bad ammo with mine. Handling both the 10/22 and 597 i have to admit ,and so does my friend , that the 597 feels more beefier and more rifle like, not taking anything away from 10/22 owners but i like the beefier feel of the stock itself.Do a search with my name to see pics of my 597. Hope i helped in your search. Good shootin! Snake Eyes

I also like the feel of the 597 - It's a good gun.
The only other reason I got the 10/22crr was because of the short barrel it comes with and no barrel band :)

If it was between a regular 10/22 and 597, I'd go with the 597.
