I am looking at a 597 one here for sale, and I have a couple questions.
I have been told that once you start using a 25 spot clip it the stock starts melting. Has anyone ells heard about this?

what are good and bads about them

The rifle is that cheap grey. I would like to pant it, cane anyone point me in the diction of a how to paint a plastic rifle site or a thread that is one here.

Thank You

I have 2. They are very sensitive to the ammo you put through them, you will have to figure that out with each individual rifle. They must be stripped right down and cleaned,or they Jam like crazy.

For the stock melting, never had that issue. I burned quite a few mags through mine back with the grey stock but due to no mag loader, follow up mags are slow to load! I did however stop using my big mag since it has no "last shot hold open" so every mag had a dryfire at the end since I don't have the urge to count every shot.

I agree about the picky on the ammo thing, haven't found what mine likes, but it still does about 1.5-2" at 50 yards which is fine with me.

Lots of good 597 specific info on rim fire central .com in the 597 forum.

^^^ Here's mine, Boyds stock, VQ hammer and extractor (amazing), stock barrel (for now I hope), 3-12x50 NCstar scope and NCstar 7-11" Bipod, and a kitchen worthy of the Precision Rifle forum (if you've been there you know what i mean).

I have the VTR model, just put 250 rounds through it this weekend with different ammo. Only 2 FTFeed and they were both on the first two clips so 230 straight with no issues. Ammo used was american eagle HP and 40gr, federal champion 40gr, winchester Super X HV 40gr, and CCI stingers. Doesnt shoot the stingers very accurately and the winchesters seemed to always have 1 real bad flyer that sometimes wasnt even on paper. Best was probably the federal or the american eagle 40 gr. Only thing I did was back of the guide rail screws, no cleaning or anything. Was using the standard 10 rd mag, thinking about getting the remington 30 rounder, 10 rounds goes by pretty quick. Anyone comment on the quality of the 30 rounders and does it have the last round hold open like the 10 rounder does?

I have never heard of the the stock melting from a 25 shot magazinge, someone is pulling your leg

Sound like you need to losen the guide rods on your 597's. I have got well over 1000 rounds with out cleaning with the 597's I have owned and only experience the odd hic-up. With the hi cap mags dont load them right up to the max, leave 3 or so rounds out as well or they can start jamming up .
Look at my video on my sig line if you want to see mine function fine;)

there was a thread here on plastic stock painting. Consensus was over some Krylon or whatever, generic stuff off the shelf. Just clean your stock of residual mold release wax, roughen the surfaces with sand paper or metal brush and paint. Goods and Bads about 597's - can't comment as I am biased, I like them very much and have two, 22lr and 22WMR. On hi cap magazines - can't remember me ever needing one while hunting, plus I like slimmer profile of a rifle with 10 round mag. Considering mixed reviews I would stick to original 10-rounders.

Anyone comment on the quality of the 30 rounders and does it have the last round hold open like the 10 rounder does?

I have a couple of the 30 round mags and I've had to exchange them both due to splitting at the seam from the spring pressure.
Don't load them to capacity or this can happen. Also I found that at capacity there is too much friction against the mag lips for the rifle to cycle properly. I now only load them to 25 and never have a problem.

That being said, I don't use them anymore because it's a pain in the a$$ to load them by hand. Wish there was an autoloader.

As far as melting the stock goes... I can't see it happening. I've rapid fired off a 525 round box of Federal bulk to see if I could make the Volquartsen extractor fail and the barrel got hot enough to be a bit painful to hold your hand on for more than 15 seconds but not hot enough to melt plastic.

I have a couple of hi-cap (still Remington name) mags.

Seems to feed better than the factory 10rd one (I've only had an issue with the 10rd Mags). Hinestly...this is the first "hi-cap" capable .22 I've owned in a long while...honestly, won't be a "feature" of future .22's for me. Sure, 10 go quick and, if your have a fancy finger, 30 go very quick too...what I find is in actual use, the 10rds are a very nice flush fir/low profile and, the hi-caps are a touch "clunky"...

I also find that when using a bench rest, the hi cap mags get in the way.
I know that Shooter's Ridge makes a 25 round mag with a different spring design that might be a bit shorter but it would be great if somebody would make a 15 round double stack mag.

painting a stock may be fine but if you really want the rifle to look good get either factory laminate stock on EE or check Boyds gun stocks site for replacement... Much nicer and they come on sale once in a while.
Like most said...extractor, hammer and loosen off the rods. I use federal champions and they are great. I do prefer factory mags though. look nicer...
