Does anyone have any experience with this rifle? I am shocked at the price. Very reasonable IMO.

I hate it its not real acurate only runs decent on stingers no exessories heavy long trigger pull. Bought a cz 17 hmr now im happy. I think if you want a semi just buy the 10/22
daniel
still sell it to you though lol

I have one and I like it. I use my CZ 452 when I want real accuracy in a .22, but the Rem 597 still sees a lot of use. Fun and reliable for the price. I like it for rabit hunting because it's so light to carry and you can pepper 10 quick shots if you need to. Oddly mine hates stingers and shoots best with the plain Remington .22 LR high velicity. These seem like terrible cartidges the cases even sometimes split but they consistently give the best groups in my 597. Incidentally best 10 shot 50 yd groups for this rifle are about 1-1/2". With the CZ they're more like 1/2"

I still think the 597 was good value at $ 200 brand new.

Buy a 10/22 and don't look back!! Shop around for a used one. I've had mine for 20 years and lost count of the round count at about 15,000 rounds 6 or seven years ago. I haven't had to replace a single part yet and it shoots as good or better than it did the day it came out of the box (3/4 inch at 50 yds).
That's my 2 cents.

Once again I ask...if the 10/22 is so good then how come most owners end up changing every part on the rifle besides the receiver? :D

Too me this says that -the receiver- is really good and the rest of the rifle must be junk for people to feel the need to replace it all, and usally after spending much money doing so. :D

Maybe Rugar needs to just sell 10/22 receivers? :D
Just a though...

People modify 10/22's becasue one can do all of the gunsmithing at home in their own basement.

It is also tempting to modify 10/22's becasue there are many good aftermarket companies who support the platform.

Trust me, it's not like people are polishing a turd here... They are simply making a good gun better.

I have a stainless barrel synthetic stock version in .22LR. I love it. They have a history of magazine problems but Remington has cured it with the third gen magazine. I usually only put 8 rounds in the mag and it runs fine. If I put 10 subsonics in I sometimes get a FTF. Other than that I love the gun. Really lightweight and just give the aftermarket some time and the accessories will be out there. I'm sure you will be satisfied with one.

I have had 10/22s and I have a 597.

597 hands down is better in my opinion. I might be the only one on this board that thinks this way but hey, thats just what I think.

10/22 - no last shot bolt hold open, crappy rotory mags, and that stupid bolt carrier release are enough to drive me to madness.

597 - trigger is heavy, but all of the above are not problems.

However I wish I could get 25 round mags for the 597.

Crappy rotary mag? That was one of the selling features on when I bought my 10/22. I hav a 5000 round count through my factory 10 shot and not one issue.
Try field stripping, cleaning, and reassembling both rifles. You'll find the 10/22 goes together very simply with a flat blade screwdriver and a punch. Anyone with a 597 can tell you how easy they aren't. The mechanism to hold the bolt back on the 10/22 can easily be modified to pull back to release with a dremel. If you can even bother with that you can buy modified mechanisms at five bucks. I found tinkering with aftermarket parts in mine to be almost as fun as shooting. It's not for everyone but It's still my favourite gun.

In my experience with both rifles I found the stock 10-22 I had shot horribly for what I spent on it. I was lucky to see 3 inch groups. I sold it and eventually got a 597lss. It would shoot inch and a quarter to inch and a half with cci mini mags. I tried about 20 brands of various ammo including match...and it still preferred mini mags.
The stock trigger pull was 5 1/2 pounds. The 10-22 I had was 7. Granted I never kept the 10-22 long enough to play with it accesory wise. I put a volquartsen target hammer and exact edge extractor into my 597 and it functioned flawlessly for as long as I owned it. The trigger was a very crisp 2 1/2 pounds and I never got a jam or stovepipe after its installation.
Really the only other aftermarket parts to upgrade to are the stock and barrel. The 10-22 list goes on forever.
It seems a lot more money has to be put into a 10-22 to turn it into a tack driver. Which is fun and all, but I want to have fun shooting it....not building it. When I couldn't consistantly hit the 3 inch target spinner at 50 yards from a bench...I figured it was time to give up the sport or try a new rifle.
As for field stripping the 597, just an allen key is all that's required. Very user friendly design. I liked Remingtons idea if the two steel guide rails that the bolt rides on. I still say this aids in the accuracy over the 10-22. In the apples to apples comparison, I think the out of the box winner is the 597 for accuracy, yet the 10-22 takes it for upgradability.

any ne saying the 597 is a good gun is tripping you must be comparing it to grandpa's cooey. The first reason i bought the 597 is i wanted a semi. First mistake. It jams doesnt feed and it has to be clean Buy the ruger. The second reason, "Oh its a new gun, give it a few years it will get some acsessories" Ive had it for 5 years I think and still nothing. Buy the ruger.
SAVE THE MONEY AND THE TROUBLE BUY THE 10/22.
I dont hate rems either I have a 870, 22.250,&7mm rem mag both in the 700 series and love them. Hate the 597 kind of like the 710. Its an oops

I have a 597LSS and it works like a charm. I have had one jam to date (FTE, came out when I worked the bolt manually) using the bulk federal packs. I have just over 2000 rounds through it and the only mod I have done is install a Volquartsen target hammer which has made the trigger pull just perfect. Mine is a later version with the improved metal mags, which might explain the better reliability. With a cheap Ruko 3-9x40 scope mounted on it I get dime sized groups at 20 meters and have had no problems popping gophers out to about 75 meters. My only gripe with it is that no one makes extended capacity magazines for it yet.
