Anybody have any suggestions on "must have" additions or alterations to the Remington 597? Something similar to the 10/22 Tips and Tricks Sticky? At $150 after the $20 Remington cash back I think they are apretty good rimfire for the money but want to make sure I do everything to get the most out of the gun. Most of the complaints I have seen have to do with the heavy trigger and the VQ hammer is supposed to help a lot with that so it is certainly on the list. I also did some reading over at rimfirecentral and found that the guiderail screws being overtightened can lead to a numer of problems. I would propose the following to make the 597 perform it's best:

Check Guiderail Screws and tighten until they just touch the rails.
Add a VQ hammer and some polishing
30 Round magazine (Anybody have any suggestions on this one? I believe the remington ones are the same as the eagle and this is probably the way to go?)

The 30 rounder Eagle mags now work fine. I had some as soon as they were put out on the market and Eagle had to send replacements.

I have a 597 in .22LR with camo stock... bought the neat looking muzzle break, an aluminum browning bipod and a scope rail. I won't lie though, I had SUPER CRAZY jams when I first bought it. about 4 months later after sending it to Michel Gravel Agency in Quebec from Newfoundland, the jamming was fixed. Wish Eagle made 50-75-100 round drums for it. now THAT would be sweet!

I have no Volq parts in my rifle and find it alright... you get what you pay for. If I had my time back though perhaps I woulda bought a 10/22...

1) Did you ever find out what caused the jams?

2) As for the 10/22, depends on the price you got the 597 at, I suppose...;)

I would say that 99% of the 597 problems are due to the rods being overtightened... the rods are flexing and cause the bolt to bind (i.e. get stuck or slow down) causing failures to feed, failures to eject and failures to fire.

It's a super easy fix. You loosen the allen keys that hold the rods in place, then tighten finger tight.

...check out this thread if you haven't already.http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129312&highlight=honest+objective I started it awhile ago and since then I still have my 597 and it's reliable as ever. Only new addition to mine is a couple of late model Eagle 30 rounders. They are "O.K." and jam once in awhile but if they are kept clean they're somewhat reliable and are a blast to shoot! [ I'm talking about the Eagle mags of course not the 597 although it is a blast to shoot too :p ]

Mad Mikey :)

All I did was loosen the guide rail screws and add a 4x32 scope. Bone stock, the 597 is a tack driver with the right ammo. Mine seems to like CCI blazers, as well as Federal Auto Match. The Remington 30 rounders are a blast as well, I have two.

So all you really need to do is loosen the guide rail screws as mentioned, keep the action well lubed (I use CLP), and you're good to go. After a 1000+ rounds I haven't had a single FTF or FTE that was the guns fault, it all comes down to ammo selection.

Well, Rem kept telling my jamming was due to mags, even though I didn't have the crappy ones they mentioned. I bought FOUR more factory 10 rounders, still no dice. They also made me pay shipping to get it fixed after calling them on the first day I bought the rifle with the issues.

The 10/22 has so many awesome mod kits and whatnot, I just like it a little more than the 597.

As well when I wanted to sell my 597, no one would buy it, not even a local smith. He said they stay clear of 597's. This was in 2005, so I'm sure Remington has gotten their act together since.
