So after picking up a nice 597, let the upgrades begin.

What are the cheap/must do upgrades for this rifle?
I checked brownells and couldn't find much.

Ammo

I don't get this need to "upgrad a perfectly fine $200 .22 rifle...

All I did to mine was get a 30 round mag for it and put a bipod on it for my 9year old to use.

Mine worked flawlessly for about 1500 rounds, then I started getting FTE.

I suggest ordering the VQ hammer and extractor from rimfire or hawktech now.
The trigger helps enormously, and you may as well have the extractor handy if your gun starts acting up (from what I've heard, this has fixed most people's problems, including mine).

Additionally, take the receiver out and loosen the guide rod set screws.

Not so much for upgrades but hi capacity mag would add to the fun. Bipod, if you have one laying around, some low end scope that looks like hi-end. Stock of course, if it doesn't have one already. Trigger, either aftermarket hammer or tweak it yourself.

Theres probably no need to upgrade it. Theres just always a way to make something better, and I've had to promise to keep my gun collection very small, so I have to upgrade what I do have :p

Thanks for the tips abrasive, I also plan on getting another magazine.
I've already bought several types of .22 ammo to see what it likes best.

It came with a decent Bushnell scope.

I highly recommend changing the hammer with VQ hammer. It lightens the trigger pull significantly compare to the stock trigger. YOu will never regret it. See how the stock extractor works for you before buying the VQ extractor. That is all you need upgrade for this rifle.
