Remington 597

I've got a 597 TVP on the way. I really hope it's not junk. I'll be doing the initial things like taking it apart, making sure there's not grit and checking that the guide rods aren't too tight etc. If it's junk I'll be pretty ticked.

I had one before too. I agree with everything saskgunowner101 said above. For installing the VQ hammer, there's a tutorial on rimfirecentral.com -it's easy.

Fun little gun, nowhere near as accurate as my mkII, but probably an edge on a stock 10/22.

No need for a VQ hammer, just polish the factory and fit (sand) the hammer bushings properly so there is no tension on the hammer when it isn't against the spring, also, so the hammer strikes the firing pin on the center.

The number of turns in or out helps nothing on the guide rods ... strip the gun completely, clean it and use a very light coat of oil on all parts and wipe of excess oil. THEN as you re-assemble, use your fingers to spin the guide rods as you tighten the screws, when they just start to put some drag on the rods, stop tightening them.... then they are set correctly. Mine shot federal bulk, remington bulk, American eagle and Mini mags beautifully without a malfunction. Accuracy was better with mini mags of course, but it cycled even CCi green tag flawlessly. P.S. also put the hammer spring in backwards when you re-assemble it. Trigger will be around 4lbs when done, and very acceptable.

I bought a Boyd's Evo stock on eBay for mine, and for less than $280 total, I had an rifle that was more accurate and reliable than most modded 10/22s for 1/3 the money.

I posted a pic up in the thread, it is the TVP model. Has anyone put a Harris type bi-pod on this kind of stock?

Wondering what it may look like, and best way to install: Rail or Sling attachement etc.

Sorry to high-jack the thread.....

Thanks for any comments.

Mike

I really like my .22 597 Great value for the money. Functions very well with the non-bulk ammo. I like the VQ hammer, definitely worth it.

The most important thing with the 597 as mentioned before... loosen up the two set screws that hold the rails the bolt rides on, then, tighten finger tight.

Good to go~!

*SKI911 - cool tip with the hammer spring!

Picked up my 597 synthetic (read least expensive) today. Ordered it from WSS in Edmonton on Oct 4th.....Had to drive to Calgary to get it after finding out there was no idea when it would arrive in Edm.
Get to Calgary, where it turns out theres 16 there in stock. Omg!
I was there and back in 7 hrs, and thats INCLUDING putting the gun in the car and going back in to browse for an hour. WTF??
Maybe if it was a $5000 Grandmaster III I may have got it sooner. :D

Finally got mine back from Canadian Tire complete with new firing pin.
They informed me that the gunsmith said I had never taken the bolt apart after 2000 rounds fired for cleaning and that's what led to the failure.
Took it out to the range and fired 3 shots before getting another stovepipe! Decided to keep firing to see if it was a fluke and luckily after 5 more magazines full I didn't get any more, so I guess I'm happy.
