Anyone have experience with Remington 597's.

Cabellas has them with laminate stock, 20" stainless target barrel, 3-9x32mm scope mounted & bore sighted c/w 10 round mag and 30 round mag for $379.00

Yes I know it's not a 10/22 but it appears to be a nice gun!

Any comments?

I have one and it's a great gun and very accurate.
There is a rumour that many are lemons. Though of the worst 597s I've seen, there haven't been any that were not simple fixes. The biggest problem that people have is jamming. It's typically caused by the bolt guide rod retaining screws being overtightened at the factory. Finger tight is all they need to be, any tighter and the guide rods bend.
Tuning the 597 is as simple as polishing the contact surfaces on the hammer, bolt and guide rods.

597's do not need much of tune up, just pull them out of the box and go shootin'. You will be picking dimes at 20 yards and quarters at 50

Had one in 17HMR, no problems and plenty accurate. Unfortunatly Rem recalled all 17 semis. They sent me a Marlin 917 Bolt action as a replacement. Not a bad little gun, but I miss my 597.

I bought one breand new from Cabella's ...3 days of shooting and a pin came flying out of it ...had to send in for repairs ....pain in the butt ....I do like it thought .

I have a 597 and love it. I seem to be lucky and missed a lot of the issues other have experienced. I just recently got a Archangel kit for it and its still working fine.

The best though would be try a few .22s and see which you prefer.

I have one of the older .22 597's bought in '98. Only has so-so accuracy. I shot a buddies newer 597 in .22WMR and it was wicked accurate, wish I had that one. But fun for plinking, and getting younger nephews into the sport.

I bought one for my wife as an "engagement" present. She loves it. I like it. The irons weren't being too kind so I put a scope on it and it is quite accurate for a semi. Just don't expect much out of the aftermarket 30 round magazines. I can fit about 20 comfortably, 25 decently, and 28 with great difficulty.

I agree with the last part of your quote. I am shooting a 597 VTR and it will hit shotgun hulls all day long standing at 35 yds. However out of the box, after degreasing, it started malfunctioning right off the bat. At the moment I am basically shooting a single shot. It fails to eject on pretty well every round. I spoke to the gun store owner where I bought it and he has had several out of the box like mine. I am replacing the extractor and apparently that will be the end of it. This is supposedly faster than sending it back to Remington. I have several 10/22's and none of them were like that out of the box. I am not giving up on the gun. I think it will end up being used a lot but it is annoying to get something new and have it screw up right off the bat.
PS: If anyone knows where to get high cap mags that work please post it!

Rugerman the problem is quite simple to fix. On the back of the upper reciever there are two set screws in a hex bolt pattern. Simply lossen them up until your action moves easy with the use of your pinky charging the charge handel. All these rifles require there own setting and PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T OVER TIGHTEN. If you do you might as well get a bolt action rifle. As for the part about the high cap mag's...
SHOOTER'S RIDGE 25 ROUND 597
Contact Jerry from Mystic Precision because these mag's are the CAT'S @$$. The only fault is that they don't have metal feed lip's.

I have a 597 Custom Target offered once by order the year after they came out. I ordered through wholesale sports for $830. It was exactly what I wanted to build a 10/22 into. Laminated Anscutz stlye target stock, Custom shop 20" stainless .875 barrel.
Considering it came from the Custom Shop...what a disappointment but accurate as hell. Its been a love hate relationship since. I had to clean off burrs on the metal and wood. Replace the hammer with a target hammer which really helped the horrible trigger performance. Lots of polishing, made a manual bolt hold open to lock the bolt open without a mag in. I have a Weaver v24 scope on it that works well.
The rifle had and still has numerous misfires or fail to feed issues, makes it unreliable. Had a round fire without the bolt completely closed which blew off the extractor and pepered my face with hot powder.Mags are only good for 8-9 rounds. The action is slopping around in the stock now after 10 years so it needs to be bedded.
Accurate, I have in my records 0.5" groups at 100 yards withh CCI Mini mags and those frangible rounds. However the Stinger size case doesn't always feed and fails to fire more than 50% of the time.
Looks good, has good design features and is accurate. Feeding system which was heralded as a highlight when it came out is second rate as is firing pin contact.

I have a couple of .22's already. My Cooey 600 bolt action is laser accurate especially with a scope and my Savage 64B is decently accurate but has FTF/feed issues.

I'm looking for a lower priced decent semi-auto unit. I only paid $70 for the Savage c/w Bushnell scope. My Cooey is the first rifle I owned and it will never leave my possession as long as I'm alive.

I have put several bricks thru my base model 597 with nary a stutter. Very accurate, too. I'm considering a Tundra stock from revolutionstocks to replace the flexy grey plastic thats on there now. I saw the Cabelas deal and thought it was pretty reasonable considering the stainless barrel and action, laminate stock, scope, and 30 shot mag. My plain jane model was $200 for the gun and $55 for the scope (Bushnell 4x32 rimfire). Spare 30 rnd mags are in the $30 range, once shipping is factored in. I could be wrong here, but it looks as if the barrel on the Cabelas gun is heavier than standard too. I have several of the clear 30 rnd mags, and have had no issues with them at all. Just my 2 pennies worth (if that.....).

I bought one of these a few years ago, with the heavy barrel and laminate stock. Great looking gun. Put a Tasco Red Dot on it and love it. Had the previously mentioned frustrations at first with it not cycling, but the comments regarding the guide rods are spot on. Once I checked those and loosened them off, it's been almost flawless. My gun loves Yellow Jackets as well, and groups better with those than any other brand I've tried.
