Just bought a Remington 597, cant wait to take it out to the range. is there anything I need to do or check for before I head out? any suggestion on ammo types.

as a side note, i got a matte grey stock which I want to paint orange camo. any links/info on how to go about it?

dont know if i am allowed to mention this but LeBarons has 15% off all firearms till the end of this month + $25 mail in rebate, and they have it regular for $159 (approx)... so if you were thinking of getting one... I'd be hard pressed to find a better price.

You are going to have to test several kinds of ammo to find one that it likes and shoots well. CCI Blazer seems to be one of the better bullk ammos to get, far less fail to fire and fail to eject than with most of the other bulk brands. The Remington Thunderbolts are a very dirty ammo and Winchester seems to have a lot of fail to fire. Don't clean your barrel, but do the the receiver. I have found with my 597 that it does shoot a lot better with a really dirty barrel. I have about 1000 rounds down it since the last time the barrel was cleaned but I do the receiver whenever it starts to get bad and not function properly.

Consider adding a Volquartsen Hammer. It will cut the trigger pull down considerably and only take about 3 minutes to install. As mentioned, tighten the guide rods only finger tight, forget about the 10 INCH pound figure in the Remington Manual. If they are too tight, they bow and bind making the rifle malfunction.

Do NOT over tighten the scope mount base with a lot of force. The receiver is alloy and you can strip the threads of the receiver.

KRYLON FUSION spray paint will stick to the stock well, and is made for plastics. Clean the stock well, and you might lightly sand the mold marks on the stock for a better appearance.

Most 597 rifles tend to be quite accurate. As mentioned, check out "Rimfire Central" for other modifications. Free floating the barrel is easy and usually results in improved accuracy.

Tried out the Remington at the range and it worked flawlessly. there were some initial FTF and FTE's but the more I shot the smoother it got. i shot at 25 yards and all the shots clumped together easy with iron sights. I plan on putting on the scope soon.

Like most will say, try tonns of different ammo. I just did today with my mossberg AR.
Crazy as it sounds, hv xpert and amerocan eagle work well. Dynapoint grouped the best but also had one or more fail to feeds in every 25 magazine.

I have the ACC-SD version. Installed a VQ Hammer that lightened the trigger huge. Also added a VQ Extractor (even though I had no major FTE's). I got my parts from Rimfire Sports but they don't ship to Canada anymore.
Don't forget to pick-up some extra mags. BTW...mine runs fine on Win555's.

I have a 597...

I really it. Lots of threads and, lots of posts... 2 guide rails are extra cool,as long as they are finger tight.

lol

I n'er even noticed my super-model toes!

The one in the picture came pre-painted. Not too sure what paint...there are brush-strokes. I didn't/don't care... I put the screws for the sights back in so I wouldn't lose or, mix them up. Weaver base is a pretty good add-on...it is a heavy bolt and, dovetails were troublesome for me.

@ Noltz - you should get someone to buy you one from le barons they have a really good price, i noticed a $60 price diff from another store in the GTA. message me for details

I was very dissapointed with my 597mag at first.
FTF's every 5 shots or so...WTF !
I noticed a gritty feel when I worked the bolt back and forth.
When I stripped it down , I found every machined cut was burred and the op rods had machine rings down thier entire length...not impressed at all with Remington's QC dept.
Once I deburred the bolt and smoothed out the op rods , it shoots great and accurate where I'm quite confident with it.
...but I'm still rather dissapointed with the lower quality workmanship I came across.
I sent a friendly email to Remington asking if they had job openings in their QC dept...they never did reply.
With the coin I laid out for this rifle ...I had better not need a VQ hammer...

I was thinking of picking up this same gun for plinking. Do you like it? Where did you get it from? Do you have any pics?

It's a nice little plinker. Fairly accurate and likes the cheap win555's. Picked it up at LeBaron's, and extra mag, out the door for under $200 with the members discount.

Just thought I'd add this, I have tried out the rifle with yellowjacket, american eagle, federal, and Rem thunderbold and this is how I would rank em

1. Rem Yellowjacket
2. American eagle/Rem Thunderbolt
3. Federal

now I only tried a sample of 50 rounds of each type. so maybe it could have something to do with the batch. I will try again a month down the road with a few more types. good news at least for my rifle is that it shot extremely well with the remington thunderbolts, just one FTF in a batch of 50. American eagle was just as good, slightly tighter groups i'd say (and the brass casings on the american eagle were the most shiny of all, not that that matters)

Federal was horrible, every second round did not fire. i only got thru 10 in the batch before giving up.

I have acc-sd version ran it for 1000 rnds no problem, then added vq hammer, extractor, free floated the barrel, it's my favorite plinker, federal bulk is reliable and reasonably accurate.
