So I'm looking for my first bolt action rifle; a Remington 700 in .308. I have my heart set on an LTR, but I don't want to spend $1600+ for a brand new one (I've only come across one online in Canada).

I was hoping to find one used, but haven't found one yet (that wasn't a scam).

What I want to end up with:
- 40x or X-Mark Pro trigger.
- 20" barrel (no shorter, but maybe slightly longer).
- A stock similar to the LTR.

Scope wise, I'm trying to get my hands on an SWFA SS10x42, but if you can suggest something very similar (other than a Falcon), please let me know.

Any suggestions, e.g. buying a certain rifle and then a new stock or something like that would sit well with me.

Thanks!

Exellent choice. Also a 700P is a good option, and there is also the XCR line that is almost the same thing .The savage 10/12 line is a viable option.

The LTR on EE can be found here, and his name is rhino62, swing em a PM, get to talking. Hes a solid guy, 100% feedback, so no scams there.

Best of luck yo you sir! and I hope you enjoy!

Thanks guys!

I understand Savage is a great option, especially for out of the box performance, but I'm very set on a Remington unless I fall onto an unbelievable deal on a Savage.

N0M4D - You make a good point with the 700P. I would probably take one of those even though the barrel is 26". I guess for the loss in compactness, I will gain velocity. Also, I understand the XCR is basically the new LTR/P, and so I would probably consider the XCR Tactical if I can't find an LTR/P.

Thanks once more!

Does anyone have any suggestions for scopes that would be very similar to an SWFA SS10x42?

As far as the scope goes, what do you plan on doing with the gun and why are you so focused on fixed power? I like sightron and nightforce myself, but I also shoot at max power if conditions permit.

Love REM 700s. I have a 700p action cut down to 20", a tack driver. You can get one cut and recrowned for cheap.

I actually have a SWFA SS 10x on my timberwolf, fabulous scope. A good runner up is a Bushnell elite 10x40. I have a Barska fixed 40x on my 700p, zero problems.

I have a fixed 10x bushnell. It is a great scope for the money, but it is a temporary item until I can decide on a variable scope. I find that past 100y it is a bit lacking in precision. I have a 6-24 on another rifle and prefer it over the fixed power.

I imagine I will be shooting from between 100-500yards for the first year or so. I like the idea of a fixed power scope for the reliability and longevity of them. I've never shot past 150yards before (and that was without optics), so what power should I be looking for in a scope? Would something like a 20x be a better choice?
Thanks again guys! I've looked or will be looking at all of these.

I shot at 500 yards on Saturday ( first time shooting past 300, 2nd time shooting 300 yards). The Zeiss conquest hd5 5-25x50 was more than enough magnification, and at one point 25x was too much (shot wrong target!). I kept it between 15-20x during the further portions and when closer I didn't go past 15x. I was a more is good, a ton is even better! When it came to magnification, my first match changed that outlook. I wanted a 12-50 s&b, but after the match im confident I made the right choice with the 5-25 s&b for 100-600 meters.

Another Sightron fanboy here. I have SIII 8X32X56 on 3 of my rifles. Love these scopes.
As for the rifle, have you thought of the Savage 10 TR. Mine has a 24 inches barrell and is quite accurate. I installed it in a Choate tactical stock bought from Jerry at Mystic. Quite accurate!

N0M4D mentioned I could get my barrel cut and recrowned for cheap (I'm pretty settled on having a 20" - 22" barrel now). Can anyone tell me how much should I expect to pay at an average price? Thanks!

Yes, SWFA are great for the price but good luck getting your hands on one.
They seem very hard to come by in Canada.
