I have a Remington 5r milsepc on order. I want to do a magazine conversion for it. I have found the HS Precision kit and the Badger Ordnance m5 kit. I realize the M5 is more work to install but I'd get a gunsmith to do it. Which kit is better? Are there cons of doing a mag kit? Are there other kits that work better? Thanks.

I have the HS Precision kit on my rem 5r. Here's my take:

Pro - Simple install, I did it myself with only minor modification to the stock. I can easily revert back to the original bottom-metal anytime I want.
Neutral - Cost. I got mine from Wolverine. It wasn't exactly cheap, but it wasn't over-the-top expensive either.
Con - Proprietary mags. Also the mags cannot be broken down for cleaning.

If I had to do it over again, I think I might save a bit longer and get a nice chassis for the action, one that takes "standard" mags like AI's. Just my $0.02....

I just ordered a Choate Tactical Custom stock and CDI DBM from Mystic for my 5R (.223). Uses AI mags and has good reviews. Did a fair bit of research and seemed to me to be the way to go.

Mind sending me a PM with a pic and what you payed for that?

Hmmm... I pondered doing this a while back. I decided against it only because my 5R is a range precision target shooter and I like loading my hand loads 1 at a time. I just have no use for a mag since I use it as a single shot all the time

Yeah I plan on using mine at the range and in the field, I really just like the way the mag kit looks vs basic top load.

X2. My thoughts exactly!!

If I want to shoot magazine fed precision I grab an AR10.

Logan1080 if set on the magazine, although the costs will add up that MDT LSS chassis system looked neat in FDE. With a Magpul PRS stock and Miad grip it could be pretty decent. It used the AI mags I believe. Might be an option if you're set on going that route. Expect to be in for around $800 though with 1 mag after you have all the parts.

The biggest "modification" I've done to a 5R is buying the complete action/barrel etc minus the stock from the EE. Then I found an HS stock in tan/black which was a takeoff from a 308 VSF. Same stock as the 5R etc only in tan/black instead of green/black. Looks cool and I have a hard time changing an already perfect rifle.

Yeah I plan on bedding the HS stock that comes with it and putting in a timney trigger. Having mag kit is nice for unloading/loading the rifle when hunting. I'll use it lots on coyotes so just being able to pull the mag out when I hop in the truck will be a nice feature for me. That CDI precision gunworks kit is looking like a solid option also.

Have you shot it yet? I'd shoot it first before messing around. The only thing I'd buy would be a torque screwdriver and set the stock/action screws to the right setting. The torque screwdriver also ensures they are both set the same. The HS stock has an aluminum bedding block. Spray everything down with G96 after you take the stock off. Wipe it down, another spray down then put the stock back on and torque it down. Good bases/rings and a good scope. Then get some Federal Gold 168 ammo and go shooting. You can sight in using 165 fusion. Won't be as accurate but still 3/4 moa at 100 yards so it's good. 1 click up with the 168 Federal gold and you're laughing.

My best group to date with the 5R was with the stock 5R trigger. Lowering it to 3lbs didn't hurt and was easier to shoot, but my groups didn't shrink. Don't get me wrong Timney's triggers etc are very nice. I have one on a wildcat rifle. But the joy of the 5R is that they shoot exceptionally well out of the box with no real work needed. Bedding the stock? Probably won't hurt but you might not need to. Changes to a rifle don't always improve them. If a rifle shoots exceptionally well, then I tend to leave it as it is. I've seen a few excellent shooting rifles modified to shoot better and well they didn't.

No I haven't shot it yet. I know the 5r is an exceptional rifle out of the box, that is why I ordered one. I chose a Timney trigger because I have another rifle set at 2.5lbs and I am used to it and it works well for me. Bedding the action may not improved the accuracy out of the rifle but it may help ensure consistency. It's not a big deal to do and definitely won't hurt anything. I am not really on a budget with this one and would like to set it up the way I want just as a treat to myself more than anything so I figured what the hell, Near bases and rings and a Nightforce scope are going on top. Thanks for the tip on giving it a wipe down and getting everything properly torqued. You found that a good 168gr to work well? I've also heard these rifles like the 175gr bullets too?

The trigger on the 5R can be set by a gunsmith to 2.5 lbs. I have the one on my VSSFII set to 2.5 and my 5R rifles are set to 3lbs. Normally you'd get the Timney when going for really light. The Timney on my 7mm wildcat rifle is set to about 1lbs. As long as the trigger is smooth and not notchy then I'd just get the weight reduced by a gunsmith for $50. I did have a Remington XR100 with a really crap trigger that I had replaced as there was no point trying to fix that stock one. Replacing the trigger won't hurt anything, you just might not need to. Worth checking out the stock trigger first.

Good choices on the scope etc. Should be a real joy to shoot.

Yes, 168 Federal gold works well. So does 175. The 24" barrel and 1:11.25 twist is perfect for these two weights.

I am running an HS stock and have the bottom metal and 2 10 rd mag's, they are perfect feeding, easy fit/install and seem very well built, but they are a little over priced.... Overall I'm very happy with mine and would still suggest them to anyone who is willing to pay it. I got the bottom metal used and 2 10rd mag's for 600.00, I know its high, but I don't regret it at all.

Bought my 5R off the EE, came with a Jewell trigger, VAIS brake and a David Tubb firing pin. Tried 168 and 175 but it really likes 155g Lapua and Palma bullets, exc groups at 200m.

Look up the PTG stealth DBM, it uses the AI mag, same inlet as the badger m5 and is much cheaper...I absolutely love mine. If you dont want to go the m5 route, there is also the stiller dbm witch fits the rem700 inlet and accepts AI mags.
