Hi guys,

Does anyone in the Halifax NS area have an action wrench and barrel block that could install a barrel for me? Or know someone who could? Happy to pay. It's just a factory barrel and action, so should just go straight on easy.

Thanks!

*EDIT*

I have decided to do the barrel install myself. I am borrowing a wheeler action wrench (that has the recoil lug recess), and buying a vice that I will make some oak bushings for.

I am now just looking for someone who has a set of .223 go/no go gauges in Halifax that would be kind enough to let me stop by and check if I was lucky enough for the headspacing etc to be correct. I'm assuming it should only take 5 minutes and I would be happy to pay you something for your time.

Thanks again!

Is the barrel off that action? If not you do know can’t just spin it on and tighten it up right?

Even if it is a set including the recoil lug and original position was marked, you should still check headspace.

Factory 700 barrels may swap to a different 700 action but the printing rarely lines up close and the headspace may or may not be correct. It is not always the straight on easy... the lug needs to be indexed correctly as well.

I live a long way from Halifax, but did a google search for Halifax gunsmiths, and looked in the online yellow pages. That might be a start, phone around, surely you will find someone.

Sometimes I get lucky, and a take off barrel screws in and headspaces nicely. Last ones I did were bang on: a .30-06 and a .260. Forget the writing and sight holes, if any. They aren't going to index.
A jig is needed to hold the recoil lug in position, as are a barrel vise and action wrench. The gap between the bolt nose and barrel face must be checked, along with the headspace.

Thanks guys, the only actual gunsmith I know near me takes months to do small jobs as he always has a hundred jobs on the go. I was just hoping that maybe someone who has the tools and swaps the barrels on their own 700 might be willing to install my barrel.

It is a barrel from another 700, but I was hoping I would get lucky with headspacing etc (not that I wouldn't check it before using it). From what I have read and having spoken to people, the majority of the time the headspacing does line up with 700's (when using factory barrels), no?

There is a good chance that bolt nose clearance and headspace will be OK. But these must be checked.

Brian Densmore or Lindsay Garnett might be able to do it for you. Both are reputable smiths. I would NOT take to to the older fellow in Hilden outside of Truro though. Took him a year and a half to drill and tap a rifle for me and it came back rusted to hell and he still charged me $150.
