You will have to forgive me for my ignorance on this subject as I'm not really a bolt action guy. A friend of mine has a Remington 700 chambered in 6mm Remington. He loves the rifle as it belonged to his Dad but he wants to rebarrel it to a more common caliber. Is it possible to rebarrel to a long action caliber like .270 Win and what other parts need to be replaced? Bolt and receiver as well?? All input is appreciated. Thanks.

A Rem 700 in 6mm Rem will be a short action, std bolt face. A 270 requires a long action, std bolt face. He could rebarrel to (assuming he wants a hunting cartridge) 243 Win, 257 Roberts, 260 Rem, 7mm-08, 308, 338 Federal and 358 Win. Either of the Creedmores will work too. Personally, I would just learn to reload. Incidentally, Hornady has recent released 6mm Rem ammo with 95 gr SST bullets. - dan

I agree with Dan on this one. The 6mm Remington is a fine cartridge and not commonly found. Three or four boxes of factory ammo would to a long way to keeping that cool rifle going for a few years. Hand loading is a better choice in the long run.

6mm is an amazing round, would be a shame to pull the barrel off if it shoots. Trading or selling it for 270 would be best. Always people looking for 6mm’s. Ammo can be found or made if needed also. Like a 243 on steroids

The long action is (naturally) longer than the short action (long action is 7 3/8" ... short action is 6 1/2"). The throw of the bolt is that 7/8" shorter in the short action. That is the room for the longer cartridges.
