I have a remington 700 action that I recently completed a build on. Tonight I went to install a set of Talley one piece bases to mount a scope and I find out that the screws provided are too small for the holes in the action. So I check the base screws from two other remington actions I have and they're both too small also. I found the box that the action came in (I purchased as new, but from a fellow CGN'r) and it says right on the box that the base holes are "8 x 40". So if this is indeed the case what are the base hole sizes on my older remington actions (one was purchased new around 2012, the other new around 2002-3)?

I've attempted to find the date of manufacture for the action, but it isn't making sense to me. The serial number on the action is RR*****A. If I follow the date coding, it would lead me to believe it was manufactured in November of 1997. I'm quite certain it is newer than this, but not 100% as I technically bought it second hand.

Was there a date that the base hole dimensions changed?

as DG as said ! also a Action with the ser # starting with RR was a BARE action supplied from Rem - Late Model - RJ

Thanks for that, I wasn't able to find that info anywhere on the web. This actions was indeed bought as a bare action. Does the RR prefix stand for all bare actions sold?

I have never seen a factory 700 action that was not 6x48...

Neither have I. Of course now I have to find some 8-40 base screws and likely ream out the bases a bit to make it all work.

*Edit* - actually it seems as if Talley has plenty of options for 8-40 Remington 1-piece base/rings. I guess I just need to order.

Brownell's sell cutters to cut the head recess for 8x40 screws with either flat or beveled screws ... many gunsmiths could alter your bases.

As double gun stated, Model Seven & 700 AAC roll stamped actions under contract were drilled & tapped for #8-40tpi scope base screws.

Barrel Code is the ONLY means to identify manufacture date by month/year of production for any rifles/shotgun barrels.
Custom Shop 40X rifles will have a suffixed serial number receiver & can be identified by calling to identify caliber and smith that built it.

RR PREFIX serial numbered receivers are current serial number sequencing & does not identify model/action etc.
RR PREFIX serial numbered receivers manufactured at Remington in Ilion,NY will be dot matrix at 6o'clock around the front action screw 1/4"-28tpi hole.
IF, the dot matrix Ilion,NY is not present the receiver was CNC machined by Remington in Anniston Alabama.

HS Precision bases should interchange with 700 Remington and are 8-40.
Not everyday shelf items but they're out there.
