Remington 700 bolt- extractor replacement

There are shops that can do it... there are shops that will offer to alter the bolt by installing part of the Sako extractor system... don't do that, it ruins the action as far safety is concerned.

There are a couple of possibilities why your extractor isn't working... it could be it isn't 'set' in the correct position from day one... it may have cracked at the rivet and fails to spring back and forth. An experienced Remington shop/smith can fix this.

Is the extractor rivetted in or a clip in? If replacement is necessary, that makes a huge difference.
Is the bolt face recess clean, including the extractor?
Is the chamber clean?

Try hooking a fired casing under the extractor and pivoting it in, compressing the ejector spring. Does the extractor grip the case?

I see you are in Arviat. I lived there '74-'81.

Which version would this be?

Yes, I remember you mentioned a few years back that you used to live here.
I still wish the name would still be Eskimo Point, it was changed in the early 90s I believe.

That doesn't look bad at all. The extractor looks normal. Make sure the chamber is clean.

The names of just about all the communities in Nunavut have changed to the Inuktitut ones. And the Roman orthography has changed too. The school was originally called Kreterklerk (named after an elder), which was modified to Qitiqliq, which is actually better. In '74 the school was just being finished - started teaching in one of the portables at the old Federal Day School, which was on the west end of town. The community was quite small then. Step past the last house, and you were on the land.

If you cleanit and double check it and it still doesn't seem right .I would send it to Dennis (Guntech) He is the Remington guru .I'm sure you can just send the bolt. That way you have piece of mind for functionality.

Yes, will do. That's what I was hoping for... just to be able to send the bolt only. Thank you.

AHA! I just figured it out!

That is not a .222 sized bolt. It is for a mid-sized case - .22-.250, .243, .308, etc.
It is never going to work with a .17, .222 sized case.

Do you have another Remington 700 by any chance? Bolts get mixed up?
Here is a .222 bolt.

I bought it for $200 from a local guy a few years ago... wrong bolt never came to mind.
Luckily nothing happened when I tried it out.
Looks like I now have an ornament hanging in the rack.

The way Remingtons fit, headspace would probably be within limits; no safety concerns.

If a .222 sized bolt can be found, there is a really good chance it would work.

$200 for a 700 with a mismatched bolt like that isn't bad. I would have paid that for the rifle as is. Sooner or later a correct bolt will turn up.

Or - Remington .222 receivers are slightly different in the way the feed rails are cut. But that bolt and receiver would work just fine as is, for a custom project in a caliber that would fit the bolt. Rebarrel and use an AICS magazine conversion system.

Ptg sells bolts. Occasionally one will show up on the ee. You'll have to check the headspace, and adjust as required. - dan
