My question is for information purpose, I know after market detachable magazine
kits are available.

Are the Remington 700 DM actions exactly the same as the conventional 700 actions
or do they take of more metal to let the detachable magazine to sit in place?
Can a conventional 700 action be adapted to DM configuration by adding
the specific stock and magazine or will some machining have to be done?

Jocelyn.

You need to have the feed rails on the bottom of the action machined down a bit. They are no longer required to feed the cartridges as the feed lips are on the DM now.

I had this done to one of mine, along with the slight stock inletting for the DM. You can buy the factory DM kit from any Remington dealer/gunsmith.

I just "converted" a BDL to a DM without machining the feed rails. As Blargon mentions the rails can become tricky. I checked the conversion with all types and shapes of bullets before feeling it was OK. AccuBonds seated out of the case would kick to one side (from left) and not chamber. Factory Hornady Light Mags were fine.
Unless you have the time and money to do this, you may want to consider a Kwik-Klip conversion. These feed from the centre of the action, so no rail machining is needed.

I also converted a BDL to DM without modifying the feed rails. You just have to be careful bedding the action,so that the magazine sits tight against the rails, and the retainers still lock the magazine in place properly. My gun fed flawlessly with all loads that I tried.

Either way, if you can reliably do like these gents have done, you'll be able to return it to a BDL down the road...

How do owners feel about the quality of the Rem. clip system - I have seen some criticism of it on other sites. I was thinking of going the reverse ( from clip to bdl floorpolate?but have been told that will not work - any opinions?

A DM action has no feed rails,so you can't just install a bdl stock and floorplate, and expect it to feed.I have found the remington DM system to be very reliable.

IMO the system is sturdy with both sides engaged in locking the mag firmly in the action. I have seen far worse set-ups. Any of the DM rifles I have seen or worked on (few) have never had feeding issues.

I have an older Rem 700 ADL that I'm going to convert to a DM using the factory bottom metal. I've played around with trying to get everything bedded just right so I wont have to remove the feed rails. I'm not overly worried about the action so I figure I'll just remove them and be done with it.
I dont have any sentimental value with this rifle so it doesnt bother me to modify it or sell it later and but an action with the feed rails if I ever want it.
