Hi,

I have a remington 700 SPS DM, the problem is that the matte blued finish on the magasine is always rusty:mad: . It seems that the matte blued finish on the magasine is thinner than the rest of the rifle. Don't reply to say I should use oil. I always make sure that the gun is stored rust free and oiled. Any advise? Should I contact Remington? could it be a manufacturing defect?

There have been a lot of issues with the new mags on the Remingtons... bad fits and bad finish. I was told they are outsourced... I think they are now made in Bad####astan or Crapatolia!

I have no solution for the rusting. But a dehumidifier or dissent packs in the safe will slow it down. I personally would call Remington, but expect no real compensation.

I think that while the bluing is thinner, its also worn off by the mag well while taking the clip in and out. My 7600 clips are not rusty, but the bluing is worn off in a lot of spots. The new rem clips have plastic bottoms on them. They also have clips for the 700 that are stainless on the sides, and black on the bottom.

I'd consider taking it to a gunsmith, having him buff it to a matte polish instead of porous bead blasting and then get him to give it a quality blueing. Shouldn't be much money and it'll never rust again if you do your part.

Or if you don't mind it looking like s... but not rusting, you could use some naval jelly on it. It contains, among other very bad things for the fingers and skin, a good concentration of phosphoric acid which will passivate the steel and stop that rust. Even ordinary gun blue solution has no effect afterwards.
Or try rust blueing. Once it is done, there will be no more rust because rust blueing is the last phase of ferrous oxydation and doesn't allow red rust anymore. A bit time-consuming but a very beautiful and durable finish.
Good luck!

The Rem 700 Magasine is stainless and only the bottom plate as a blue finish. That part dose not go in the mag well.
