Hello all

I recently acquired a Remington 700 XCR Long Range Tactical in a trade. I am having issues with it feeding, it only seems to be with the 5th and 3rd round. As soon as the bolt moves the round forward, they jump out of the action. The 1st, 2nd, and forth seem to feed fine. Is there an issue with the spring tension of the follower. This is the Bell & Carlson stock with the floor plate. Any advice helps, thanks for looking.

Make sure the mag box is fitted square and isn't interfearing with the feed lips.
Sometimes a mag box that isn't square overlaps these lips causing every other round to pop out.

That's exactly what's happening with my .17 remington. I use it as a 2 shot. Gun is so accurate I never need more than 1 shot anyhow and don't want to fiddle with it to fix being afraid it will lose its accuracy. True story

First check that that the mag box is installed properly. Don't be too quick to dismiss that; everyone believes their's is correct or they would have changed it already. It needs to be all the way in, not overlapping at the back and also fitted into the recess in the floor-plate. Sad to say, but most feeding problems on a Remington can be traced to putting it together wrong.

Assuming that the box is in right, look at the removed action from the bottom with the box installed. You will see that there is a space between the sheet metal and the solis action. That space can be used for some judicious massaging to the mag box. In a general sort of way wider will position the cartridge deeper and lower, which keeps the contained longer. Narrower makes it sit higher and jump the rails sooner. My guess is that on yours the rear of the box is a bit narrow on the one side.

A little goes a long ways when bending mag boxes. The good news is a new one is only about 20 bucks so there's only so much damage you can do. Probably the most common source of damage is someone putting it together wrong and torquing the screws down thereby bending the #### out of everything. Which brings us full circle to the beginning.

Couple guys gave you good info already. In addition, ensure the follower is fully seated on the spring and also check to see if the spring/follower assembly is sliding back and forth on the floor plate, slop there can bite you as well. Not all floor plates, springs, followers are the same dimensionally hence the potential for slop.

After making sure the DBM and mag are properly seated turn your attention to the feed lips on your mag. If they're too far apart it can cause rounds to pop loose. If they're too tight the round will sit too low and the bolt won't catch it. As a reference the bottom of the bolt should catch the rounds above the primer. Not too high it only catches the rounds by a hair, not so lot the bolt actually contacts the primer.

With a miss feed problem I first start by bending the mag box open and then place it in the bottom of the action... the action will then close it up the correct amount. I have found if the box sides are too close together, shells pop up and out... Then carefully assemble the bottom metal. When the screws are tight you should be able to feel slight movement of the box when you use your fingers to check this. Slight movement insures the box is not pinched by the tightening of the action screws.
