I bought a 700 SPS in .22-250 in April and I've only shot it at the range so far. Yesterday I noticed that it has a feeding problem.

I can put 1 or 2 rounds in the magazine and it will feed normally, but as soon as I put a 3rd round in, the top round is always mis-aligned and will "pop out" once the bolt is drawn back. The 3rd round doesn't sit tight against the rail on the right side of the magazine, it sits crooked, pointing a bit to the left. I can put 4 rounds in the magazine and can chamber the first shot, but the next one pops out and causes a jam. Any ideas?

Are your bullets too long for the mag? If so they will not allow proper alignment. You might also have a bent lip on the mag. Is this a detachable mag or internal?

I have the same problem with one AR mag, 1-4 rounds load fine but the last one always pops out and jams or the rifle locks open. Readjust the mag lips and the problem is solved for awhile.

All I can suggest is to take it apart and make sure the magazine box is spread as wide as it can be where it fits into the bottom of the action. I spring the box apart so it has to be forced into the action on assembly.

There's actually a lot of room in the magazine... my loads might be a bit longer than factory, but not significantly. The magazine is internal with a floor plate. I tried pushing the rounds all the way to the back of the magazine and all the way to the front of the magazine, but the 3rd round is always a problem.

I'll try that and see if anything looks out of place.

Thanks for your replies guys.

also maybe check the follower for the correct angle laterally and longitudinally to get the 3 or 4 rounds into the mag the cartridges alternate left/right and maybe the follower is crooked/cocked ?

Thanks guntech, this was more or less the problem. When I opened the floor plate and looked in, I could see that there was more "rail" showing onone side of the action than the other. I took the rifle apart and the box part wasn't square. A simple adjustment later and the rifle feeds fine. :D

I may have accidently bent it a bit when I took it apart to adjust the trigger earlier this year. Thanks for your tip!
