I have a Remington 700 po-lice brand new and have saw some packages to shoot .25" groups at 100 yards. They want 1500 for the package and i give them my rfle. What do you guys think would be a good start. Fluting the barrel? or lapping the bolt ? or ???? Thanks

Shoot the gun and when you can out shoot it then have some work done on it...

"...Fluting the barrel?...or lapping the bolt..." Neither does anything for the accuracy. Bedding the action, a trigger job and good sights will. Oh and carefully loaded match grade bullets. Shoot it before you do anything though.
Whether or not $1500 is a good price depends on what they'll be doing.

Voodoo, that's the correct answer! ;)

Seriously though, shoot it with match grade bullets and wear out that barrel knowing full well it will group under 1/2" any day if you do your part. Then after you wear out that barrel, get a new custom one installed and see your groups tighten up only a little better. Fluting a barrel or lapping the bolt lugs won't increase accuracy, except if the lugs are really that bad, but chances are they will make at least 50% contact in any Rem 700 I've seen.

If you need to sell that barrel and just got to spend the money, give me a PM.

Thanks guys. I have bought a 2 piece tactical EGW base and Leupold QRW 30mm medium rings. And i will get a scope prob a Falcon Menace 4-14x44FFP. that should let me shoot to 600 yards i would think.

Wait a second, you want to blow $1500 to get a rifle capable of 1/4 MOA, but your putting on a $400 dollar scope?

I'm not knocking the Falcon scopes, I have a 2.5-10x myself. Just think your priorities are a little misaligned.

Your rifle is probably very capable of producing 1/2 inch groups at 100m. Nothing wrong with that at all. If I were going to spend any kind of money to tighten things up a bit, it would be on a bedding job, and getting the trigger adjusted to where you want it. If I had $1500 to blow than I'd probably start to look at some of the better quality scopes.

Buy lots of ammo and get to the range often. That will improve your groups more than anything.

I have seen these rifles shoot good ammo under an inch, right out of the box.

make sure the abrrel is free floating and not touching the forend anywhere. A beddding job would be a good investment for accuracy and would not cost much.

By the time you wear out the first barrel you will be ready to upgrade to a better barrel, chamber and crown.
