Remington 700 in .223 Good for 500m + ?

I was at phoenix range yesterday and they had a used remington 700 in .223 with a scope on it too. Seemed in great condition. I dont know much more then it was a 700 in 223 with a leupold scope.

What should I look at when looking at it? The price was 950. So it seems like a good deal. But I dont know.
I want the rifle to plink and for target out to and hopefully past 500m.

Depends on twist

In order to shoot out at 500 you need a heavier "higher BC" bullet.
I shoot a cooper with a 1-14 twist and I am best to 300 yds. It will
do 500 yds but in any breeze it's tougher than I am good.
An 8 or 9 twist barrel will take 700 grn bullets and do better.

I would look at something like 6mm to shoot 105 grn bullets if you
wanted to get serious about it. 6 BR is the best at 500.
I am looking for a 6 mm rem. for the same purpose.

Unless you can confirm the barrel twist, get a Savage in 223. The twist in most Rem's is simply too slow for longish distances due to the lighter bullet you can stabilize.

If you want a small cal (22 or 6mm), be very careful of the twist rate. Most factory rifles have a twist that is too slow.

The 6.5, 7 and 30 cals comes with twists that can use most any LR match bullet.

You'll need a Savage 10FP or Rem 700P .223's to achieve the results you want..

Used my 700 PS 223 rem. 1-9" twist with good success with 69gr Sierras @ 3100fps out close to 600 mtrs. Our range is somewhat limited to close to 600mtrs. so the 69gr bullets work just fine. Still have to watch the wind though!
When the need to rebarrel it will be with a 1-8" twist tube that I've got sitting in the corner. Then bring on the 80gr bullets !

My experience with 80 gr VLD's is that you have to seat them so that they are nearly touching the rifling. Groups fired in my Rem. 700 actioned .223 went from 2'' at 100m to 0.5" at 100m by seating those needle like VLD's closer to the rifling - same powder type and charge. A word of caution - don't seat so far out that they jam into the rifling as this will drive pressure way up.
