I just got a Remington 700 heavy barrel in .223. What's a good bullet weight for long range shooting?

I believe it's 1 -12, but not 100 %.Is there a way to tell for sure on the gun itself short of some fancy way of measuring the actual twist inside? Probably .62 would work slightly better than .55 gr?

Get a cleaning rod with a jag and snug fitting patch. Place a mark(tape) on the rod and see the distance of linear travel for one rotation of the rod.
That'll be two bits please.
Cheers

The cleaning rod trick is the surest way. Let us know which model Remington you've got and we can tell you what the twist is supposed to be. FWIW, factory 700's in .223 are almost always 1-12", unless the rifle is an LTR, PSS, VTR, or has an aftermarket barrel.

If that is the case bullets 60 gr. and under are the options likly to work for you. A faster twist is a different animal all together.

Thanks for the tips guys. It's 1-12.

Now I just need to replace the cheap flimsy scope mount and i'll be all set for spring.
