I saw this remington 700 LSS (not mountain LSS) in 30-06 in my local sporting store and can't take my mind off of it. Gray high gloss laminate wood, with rised cheek monte carlo, R3 recoil pad, Leupold rings and mounts, jeweled bolt, target crowned, free floating 24" satin stainless barrel, bushnell elite 3200 3-9*40 scope. I mounted it, and it comes right up to my cheek and the scope aims itself.

All brand new for $1230 and half price on first 2 boxes of ammo I buy.

What do fellow gunnutz think? Good buy? Good gun?

Why not get it in 300 WSM? It is available this year. I don't think its a stellar deal at that price. You could get a Tikka T3 laminated S/S ina whatever cal you want for about $950 then toss a scope in it for $250 plus $30 rings or so and you'll be very happy and have a MOA guarantee and a DM instead of floorplate

The LSS from Remington is capable of very good accuracy, I have 1 that has been bedded and the trigger reworked that shoots under 1/2 MOA at 100 easily. The 06 may be old news and not as hip as the new beltless magnums, but is still a very dependable hunting cartridge out to 500 yards or beyond, which is plenty for most hunting.

because unless he is shooting over 300yrds it offers no practial advantages  oh wait, you;re from brampton too? that explains it..... ;)

LSS = great rifle. you could do a lot worse. I say go for it. LSS in .30-06 is a great choice for BC hunting.

thats great amphib! Lets all go with 100 year old technology and pretend its new and cool not to mention a short action and capable of higher volocities which last time I checked tended to be flater shooting with the same bullet.

I own a -06 but only because remington doesn't chamber 7600 carbines in 300 WSM. It will do the job but not a ###y....the 30-06 is like gramma in cotton bloomers with a skid mark....wouldn't you rather have a Victoria Secret model in garter belt and thong??

300 yards is easy to do with an 06, I think you would need to go ALOT further out for there to be significant advantage to the 300WSM, there is just not that difference in velocity between handloaded 06 or WSM with the same bullet to give it a big edge until you get out a long way.
Whether a 180 gr bullet is shot at 2900fps out of an 06 or 3000 fps out of a WSM I believe akes little difference, assuming the same bullet is used.
Also 06 ammo is easier to find and less expensive, both in my mind` positive attributes.

please prove to me how that will make my moose any more dead? inside regular hunting ranges.

look at the original post. did he ask for advice on other calibers?

so you think short fat things are ###y, bet you love brampton :D

Well, if they had one in 300 WSM or RUM I might've thought about it, but all they had in the store was the 30-06, and the 300 RUM only comes in the version with the thumb hole, which isn't really what I wanted. If 30-06 is 100 year old and still in existance, I guess it is certainly a fairly ok cartridge.

I needed more of a review on the gun itself. Thanks for all the input though. I didn't mean to start a arguement over which 30 cal is the better round...

It's a Rem 700. excellent quality, excellent accuracy, excellent Value. probably the single most popular hunting rifle out there. It's stainless, so worry not of the weather. the Laminate stock is very tough, weather/water resistant, and looks great. the triggers can be adjusted easily and break like glass.

the rem 700 is the action of choice for most custom rifles, gunsmiths are familiar with it, and has an overwelming amount of aftermarket accesssories.

what more to you need to know?

great gun, proven action! Think about bedding the action and recoil lug area and I'm sure accuracy will be excellent. The stock is nice and adds reasonable weight for help in the recoil department as will the R3 pad. All together very nice rig but I still think the price is average

You didn't...someone else had to jump in and make a comment on what "they" perceive is better for you. ;) Buy that 30-06 and don't look back. The rifle you are looking at is superb. Accurate, feels good in the hands, and attractive. :D Enjoy, Eagleye.

"make a comment on what "they" perceive is better for you" well if thats the case....doesn't a "?" signify a question not a statement there old eagleye??? Nor do I beleive it was even a comment, I beleive it was a QUESTION. A question usually is a prompt for someone to reply with an "ANSWER" An answer was what I was asking for as to why the 30-06 was his caliber of choice. That's a statement there big fella. No disrespect, just wish you could spend more time reading and understanding what was written

Thanks for all the support. I know the price could be lower but it's good enough for a local gunshop. My impatience costs a bit more. I will pick it up on Friday, already put down a deposit today. Now if only I can post photos...

For that kind of money, I'd buy a 700SPS, have it accurized and bedded into a new McMillan.
