I am interested in one of these rifles. Has anyone had any experience with this caliber good or bad vs the 300 WSM etc and do you think the caliber will eventually be obsolete. I don't know enough about the cartridge to say if it has a loyal following or not. I also don't reload so the availability of factory ammo down the road could be an issue. Any opinions are appreciated.

I don't know about a loyal following, but the 300 RUM is definately more powerful then the WSM, by quite abit. Which means recoil is a fair bit stouter as well. As for not reloading, I suggest you start, you'll find it is a fine (and entertaining) support for your shooting hobbies. - dan

Thx for the replies. A couple of comments were made regarding the 300 RUM. On Remington's site, the rifle is listed as a, 300 Rem Short Action Ultra Mag. Would that make a difference in recoil and ammo availibility vs a 300 RUM in a long action. Sort of like a 300 Win Mag vs a 300 WSM. Thx.

I owned a 300saum in a Savage 10, it was a nice cartridge

I'd think if you dont reload that the 300saum in the LTR would be a poor choice. All loads out there now are for hunting. I'd be definetely going with the 308 Win in the LTR if I was you.

I have bought one of this caliber for my wife, factory thumbhole from remington, they built this nice rifle on a model SEVEN, shoot like my .300 win. mag with less recoil, my wife is 120 pound so i install vais muzzle brake, less recoil than a .308, amazing how accurate too for a model seven...

She drop 1 moose 2 year in a row, only need 1 165gr. round well placed each time...

I can only recommand one

Also, take care because remongton is offering 190gr. MATCH ammo in this caliber
