Hello,

I am new to Remington and wondering what will fit my Remington 700 Mountain SS 30-06? It has the standard action (not long or short action), as per the research I've done. And it has the 22" contour barrel. I've seen in here people selling their Remington 700 SPS, ADL or BDL stocks and being new to this rifle, it is alien to me. My rifle as many of you know, has the Bell & Carlson aramid-fiber-reinforced stock and I would like to add on a nice laminate or walnut stock sometime down the road. But I need to get to know the details of the rifle before doing so. Please help, thanks!

Your rifle is a "standard" long action.

Most aftermarket stocks are for "normal" diameter barrels so your lighter - and skinnier - mountain rifle barrel may look strange with big gaps on both sides of the barrel when mounted in a "standard" stock.

Will a 22" bbl remington 700 sps .30-06 sporter weight barrel fit as well?

I don't understand your question.

A sporter-weight barrel will be a larger diameter than your mountain rifle. Your mountain rifle barreled action will fit in a long-action SPS stock but the barrel will look like a cocktail wiener laying in a regular sized bun. ;)

I guess my first general question and my second question, kinda leads to the idea that I would like to swap out the barrel and stock. I know I can go and buy another Remington 700 that meets my needs of visual preference, but it is cheaper to buy a barrel and stock, than it is buy a whole rifle.

Not unless you have a gun-smithing shop out in your shed.

You would be many dollars ahead to sell your mountain rifle and just buy the standard sporter you want. BTW your stainless mountain rifle is worth a fair bit more than a SPS.

So you're saying that another 30-06 barrel would not fit without having to do some gun smithing procedures? I find it hard to believe that another 700 model 30-06 barrel won't screw into mine...and doing so using another stock that would fit the other barrel. As for my mountain rifle, I know it is worth a fair bit more than a SPS. As for the SPS, and with some research, I read many do not like the SPS because of the softer stock. With that said, what about another 30-06 barrel in, lets say a;

- CDL DM
- VTR
- BDL
- XCR II
- Long Range
- XCR II Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Edition
- XCR

Example like those editions/models of the 700 series. Are you saying that another 30-06 barrel will not screw on and installed on one of those listed stocks?

You will need at a minimum an action wrench and a barrel vise as well as some go/no-go gauges to check head-space. Look at about a $400.00 investment.

You may get lucky and have a donor barrel head-space fine on your action but then again it may not in which case the chamber may need to be re-cut or the barrel will need to be shortened and then have the barrel's chamber re-cut.

If you want to play around at home with swapping barrels at home with a minimum investment I suggest you sell your Remington and buy a Savage.

One other option is to buy a laminate mountain rifle stock made for a long action (mtn rifle). Not my cup of tea, but certainly an option and no need to change barrels.

All Remington 700 barrels will screw into all Remington 700 actions... but none of them will index correctly (sights and or printing not lining up) and the headspace also requires checking at the least and most likely adjustment as well. So plan on an action wrench, a barrel vise, chambering reamers, headspace gauges, and a lathe and more knowledge than you have at present.

The only thing different about your mountain rifle barrel is the contour. Stocks are different in barrel channels, action lengths and bottom metal.

It's your money but it would be considerably easier and cheaper to sell your rifle and buy what you want.

Action wrench, nut wrench, barrel vise, headspace gauges, and pre-chambered barrels are still required.
