As anyone had this problem before?

I bought my son a Remington 700 SPS DM recently, and this week he purchased a Nikon Prostaff scope for it. I fitted Weaver scope bases to the rifle, and I also bought him the low, Weaver 1" rings. These rings are for up 38mm objective lenses, but they work on my Tikka T3 with a 40mm objective. Well, the scope touched the barrel, so I exchanged the rings for medium height at Cabelas, and the scope fits just fine, the only problem is, I can't get the bolt out! The scope needs to be about 1mm higher, before the bolt will slide underneath the scope. I could fit high rings, grind the bolt handle a bit, or simply shim up the scope bases.

Bloody anoying

Different guns have different bolt cocking angles, and you have to make the bolt/mount/ring/scope combination work right. That's one of the reasons there are a lot of bits and pieces for sale in the EE section...

I personally would not grind or otherwise alter the bolt handle. Rather,I'd look for a scope with slightly smaller ocular bell, or if you like the Prostaff, simply get higher set of rings for it.

Should have got a Thompson Center and you would have never had this issue and a better rifle. But since you didn't you will need higher rings to clear the cycling or modify the bolt handel.

I got some .75mm plastic shim stock from work and it turned out fine! I cut them slightly smaller than the scope bases, so you can barely see the shims.

Aluminum from a coke can would work.....but I would need 6 pieces to equal the one plastic shim. As this shim is sandwiched between the action and the scope base, you would also need to punch 2 holes in each shim, and that's not easy on aluminum that thin! I just used my soldering iron to burn the holes through, then trimmed it all up afterwards with a scalpel.

I would post some pictures, but I don't know how!
