I asked a question about a Remington 700 in 375 H&H in another forum and I have receive this reply "The 700 action is basically a steel pipe. The recoil lug is just a big washer. In a big bore rifle, that's not a good design to handle the torque generated by heavy bullets" Anything wrong with the 700 and big bore caliber?

different actions lock up different ways... single lug, double lug, triple lug, rotating bolt in a carrier (ar-15, winchester 12 guage etc..), and many more.. Some are much stronger than others..
Lever actions always seemed a little 'rickety' in this regard IMHO of course.. I am no engineer, but I am interested enough to collect and scan many blueprints

Get the 700... you wont regret it..... and worst comes to worst they stand by it......

The 700 Remington is undoubtedly one of the safest, mass produced actions in the market place. Not only will it handle the .375 H&H and .416 Remington medium bores, it will handle some big bore cartridges as well, provided the case head diameter does not exceed the ability for it to be contained by the bolt head. Now in some applications where powerful medium or big bore rounds might be used, some individuals, myself included, might prefer a controlled round feed action, but that has nothing to do with the strength of the action or the manner in which the action fastens to the stock.

I had a 700 Safari in .458 back in the 70's that I put around 500 rds. through and had no issues with it.

It is an excellent and strong action and trusted by MILLIONS of people for just about any build and caliber you could fit inside of it. I wouldn't and don't hesitate to build and rely upon this action for nearly any job. I know its not big bore, but I have complete trust in it for my .338 LM, and wouldn't think twice about going bigger and bolder for a different build.

I wouldn't use a 700 for a build on anything larger than a standard magnum bolt face (yes, I know they offer them in 338 Lapua but if the action isn't satisfactory to Rick at ATRS for such a build then I'm going to err on the side of caution). Not enough diameter for my liking. But that said you can build up to a 458 Lott on a standard magnum bolt face so if you need bigger you'll likely have the pockets to go with a better action choice for that task.
I think that BUM is simply applying his own standard. You can do what ever you want for your standard.
