Well... it's been a while but I finally finished my Remington 700P, chambered in 6.8mm Rem. SPC. I bought her from Wolverine a few years back but never got around to doing anything with the old gal. No major changes really, just a few touches I felt necessary;
A simple Zeiss 3-9x40 scope with a mil-dot reticule and 2-1/2" sunshade was my optic of choice. Naturally the flip-up scope caps are a functional addition, the skull is an indulgence in vanity to be sure.
I mounted the scope with nothing short of the best - US Optics P6M-3000L rings on a US Optics 3/4" extension 0-MOA Picatinny base. I figure a solid interface between rifle and scope to be very important, and is often overlooked.
A Harris 12-24" bipod was my choice as they are simple, functional and reliable. The height allows for comfortable shooting from prone, sitting or bench positions.
The final touch was adding the H-S Precision epoxy-coated steel bottom metal, complete with a detachable magazine. The factory bottom metal was a sore spot with me, it felt very cheap and flimsy. With the 6.8mm SPC cartridge this configuration allows for a 13+1 round capacity, impressive to say the least.
One thing I need to address is the comb height, it's a little low. Does anyone know of a good cheek riser that will suit this configuration? I was looking at the Smith Enterprises unit but then noticed it has only a 1/2" rise... not quite enough I reckon.
One possible final addition will be a Jewell HVR trigger, but I'll wait to see how the factory unit breaks in before making the decision.
I will grudgingly need to dip into my meager stockpile of ammunition and sight the scope in, I'll post a range report afterward for sure. I figure 200m will be a reasonable distance to zero at, considering the ballistic data for this cartridge.
Any comments are welcome, anyone else enjoying one of these fine rifles?
Cheers
