Are they still producing remington 700 police rifles? My friend said they were out of production, and they are hard to come by. Any one still have them new in stock.

This better not be true or my Christmas present to my self just took a huge dump. Lord, please don't make me buy a Savage!

well, in that case i better save alittle more and get the 700 XCR tactical, love that green stock.:D

Your "friend" has no idea what he is talking about. The P-series has been very sucessful for many years and is a staple for Remington.

That being said, you never know what stupid rule changes US Homeland Security and Department of State are going to come up with now, that seems to be a daily occirance with them! They will not allow Kimber to Export the new Tactical Rifles becasue of the model names. I certainly hope there is no truth to this.

They are still being made... but when I talked to one of my distributors, rumour was that at the end of this year the new CDN importer for Remington rifles was not going to be selling the P's to civvies. So... the distributors were putting an order in for as many P's as they could...

Not sure how much merit this has... but I figured I'd throw it out there.

North Sylva in Toronto is a remington dealer and they would be more than happy to take your money.

Rare - No, Expensive - yes, suitable replacement in a cheaper stock that can be replaced - Rem 700 SPS Varmint.

Same rifle - less money because of stock. I own one that now resides in an AICS stock - totally awesome.

Cheers, Carl

Carl,

Not exactly the same, the P models are Parkerized and they are test fired at the Remington factroy for accuracy, that is what Greg Foster the VP of Government sales told me. Other then that, though, barreled actionis the same.;)

Probably just a rumour or a tactic to get people to panic buy. Remington openly says that they would prefer that their LE models not be sold to civillians, but dealers do anyways.

Actually the SPS Tactical would be a closer match...shorter barrel, better finish etc.

The new police models are 26" as well as the SPS Varmint - the finish is nicer on the SPS in my opinion - more closely matches parkerising, thus my recommendation for the SPS Varmint.

The original police models were 24", I used to own one years ago - HS precision stock and all.

Just as above, it's a way to get the same rifle as near as can be, with out breaking the bank and allow for a decent scope purchase.

Cheers, Carl

i just got mine from wolverine yesterday, so happy with it........

how much are the 700P's ? are they worth the difference over the 700sps varmint?

does anyone have the varmints in .223 in stock?

edit I see wolverine has the 700p for around 1100? pretty big increase from the sps varm.

The 700p comes with a nice hs precision stock, whereas the sps has an injection molded el cheapo stock. Also, the 700p is nicely parkerized, whereas I believe the sps is more cheaply finished. Also (#2) apparently the 700p's are factory tested for a slightly higher grade of quality-control.

they are still producing the 700P, but it isnt what it used to be. i have one from the late 70s or early 80s with the olive green parkerizing, and just looked at a new one and it doesnt even look like the same rifle. the one i looked at was rusting in the brand new box, all around the barrel/action seam and the scope mount holes. the finish looked horrid, like some sortof cheap flat black paint instead of the deep parkerizing on old models.

the old models had the same quality as regular gloss blued remington 700s, but were parkerized. the new ones look like rough, bead blasted junk where the bead blasting and 'park' is just hiding sloppy fit and finish.

IMO i would not buy a new remington 700P. for around the same price you can get one of their stainless varmint models which will be more durable, just as accurate, and practically the same gun. with the 700P you were paying for a more durable finish, heavy barrel, more consistent accuracy and the McMillan stock. back then the remington varmint rifles were blued with just a cheap plastic stock, which paled in comparison to the aluminum bedding block fibreglass mcmillan.

but now you can get the same stock, and even more durability out of a stainless varmint model - and much better fit and finish.
