Picking up a Mauser M18 in 30-06 as my first hunting rifle (shooting for years but just now thinking about trying hunting). The rifle uses Remington 700 scope bases. I am Debating on either a Pic rail, Leupold standard base & rings or just direct mount rings.

Scope I have for it is a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 (decent enuff scope I think for hunting? Just one I have lying around from when I swapped most my other rifles to FFP scopes)

Most my other rifles are more target focused and I run 20+moa canted Pic rails. For hunting i am assuming this be mostly unnecessary and just added weight/height.

Goal is to keep this rifle light and slim. Lower mount scope would be ideal i think.

Honestly man for a good hunting rifle Weaver bases have served the purpose for many decades and are by far the cheapest option when running a 25 mm tube are used to buy the expensive stuff but honestly never had a rifle go out with Weavers other than it being a pain in the butt to set your scope back can so when you torque up its level I have been converted and I am a believer lol

I'm running Nixon bases on my 700, Weaver style. They were what I could find locally in steel at the time, most other options i was finding were aluminum. Rings are also steel, Weaver grand slam.

Full size rails are nice for the flexibility of mounting, but they often necessitate mounting the scope higher than I like. My scope is so low I can't use the plastic bikini cover that came with it, i use a cheap neoprene cover instead now.

^^ This ^^ ..... I think folks shy away from these because they don't cost much and think they will fail or don't look cool enough. <eye roll>

I've used them for decades on everything from 222 up to 375 magnums w/o any issues whatsoever. None, not once.

Yes, sir the old boys taught me the error of my ways and now all I buy is Weaver scope bases, and rings and I just love the cost. I could never justify ever paying one or $200 again for rings
