Is it just me or are these 2 guns the exact same thing except for a fancy rust proof finish on the XCR?

I can't find any other difference other than the allmost a 400$ difference.

The XCR is a stainless gun, even including the bolt lugs and bolt head, after which the rustproof finish is applied. It also has a Hogue stock with soft rubber gripping areas. The SPS is the replacement for the old synthetic ADL and is a parkerized carbon steel gun with no rustproof finish, and no Hogue stock.

XCR has a jeweled bolt

SPS has a more basic stock and a matte finish on the bolt body

they'll both kill deer the same

yep it's stainless steel

The result is a finish that provides scratch and corrosion resistance far superior to stainless steel alone and better than any other gun on the market.
I interpret that as it being stainless with a coating...

and if you check out the XCR RMEF rifle...

The stainless steel barreled action of this limited edition rifle uses our proprietary new TriNyte™ Corrosion Control System to produce a finish that provides scratch and corrosion resistance far superior to stainless steel alone and better than any other gun on the market

my SPS had a J lock.. and albertacowboy pointed out no rustproofing.. I found that out the hard way. I came back from the range on humid day, went to clean the rifle two days later, opened the gun case and there was surface rust all over the outside of the barrel. Thankfully I was able to clean it up with some gun oil and elbow grease and sold that piece of crap. I loved the R3 recoil pad though, just wouldn't group worth sh*t with any of the various store bought ammo I tried.

What do you guys think of using the SPS as the beginnings of a custom gun? Cheap to get into the barrel and action for the $500, replace the stock with a Mcmillian and have the gun coated completely and still have a cheap gun?

Thoughts?

thanks

Any rust...blame yourself, not the rifle! Gun cases are the absolute worst place to store firearms, even short term! The foam, lining, padding, etc...absorbs moisture, especially when its humid and holds it! You're basically storing your carbon steel firearm in an aquatic environment given the fact that it was a very humid day when you were shooting...even stainless steel isn't impervious to this. Also, since you fired the rifle, you obviously touched it with your bare hands. Human perspiration is acidic...a hot, humid day, you sweated and left your acidic fingerprints all over your rifle. Add in the damp gun case and voila!

A buddy did the same thing with his new stainless steel Browning A-Bolt last year. He used it, then left if in his padded gun case and forgot about it. When he came back after a few weeks he discovered that stainless steel is rust "resistant" not "proof"!
