i recently got a 7mm rem mag in the stainless remington 700 sps 26 inch barrel,I noticed that the barrel is not free floating appears the barrel is touching the stock right at the end. wondering if sanding it down so its completely free floating will make any difference and is the plastic is stiff enough to do this or make it worse i plan on replacing the stock with a bell and carlson or hs precision stock when i get the funds to do so and the right deal comes along to get one. is there anything i can do to this factory stock in the mean time to make it better.i havent shot it much purchased a cheap box of factory 150 grain fusion shot 2 groups not in the best conditions and very windy that day got a 1.25 inch group at 100 yards . before trying other loads i was seeing if theres anything i can do to the stock if its worth it or just wait tell i upgrade the stock .

Do not do that to a tupper ware stock, the spot that touches is there to put a bit of pressure on the barrel ... if its fiberglass, and you sand the nub off you will have to bed it afterwards.

i personally have effed around trying to bed a tupper ware stock back in the day, with no success. Not saying it cant be done ... but it didnt work for me.

if its tupper ware ... put a new stock on it ... or leave it alone

Do not remove the small V that the barrel sits in at the end of the forend, the rifle will not shoot better 100% free floated. My son and I have both used the SPS stock without issue, some say it's flimsy and bendy but we have had no issue with them at all. I bedded the actions on a couple and they will shoot sub MOA with the right loads. I also inletted and epoxied a couple carbon arrows into the bottom of the forend on one and stiffened the forestock up significantly. I did this because the barrel needed more pressure at the forend tip than the plastic stock would apply reasonably. Stiffened the forestock and applied more up pressure on the barrel and she'd shoot 3/4" groups. That was a 300 WM........then my kids buddy flipped his canoe and lost his rifle in the middle of hunting season on a Sat and came to me on Sunday for a new rifle so I had to sell him that one........
Although a little "rough around the edges" the SPS Mod is still a 700 and will usually shoot very well.
