I have been looking to get a .223 for a while now and have read alot about this rifle for this site and some others.

What are the gun nutters thoughts on this riffle ?.

I plan to leave it bone stock for a while perhaps a better trigger. It's diet is going to be cheap factory rounds for a while until reloading for it gets set up.

Any other guns in .223 I should look at in the 700$ price range ?.

Thanks for any helpful info guys !!!! :):):):)

I just bought one haven't had a chance to shoot it yet... so I can't tell you how it shoots but the trigger is decent and breaks nice but the stock will be the first thing I replace on it or at least modify it to stiffen the forearm. I bought the SPS because lots of people have them and like them, sure I could've spent a few hundred more and got a better rifle but I felt this was all I needed for now.

I have this gun in .308. It has an H&S precision aftermarket stock which for the price is worth the money. It has been bedded properly. This removes the one weakness the gun has. The Factory Hogue stock is a bit flimsy. I like the trigger and would wonder if spending money on a better trigger group would change performance much. Try changing the stock as a first step if you want to spend some money. I have shot a 0.15" group with this gun and expect 1/2 to 3/4 MOA all day long. Sorry that I can't give you any direct evidence on the gun chambered in .223.

cheers

Jerry is very knowledgeable and has a nice easy way about him when it comes to sharing info. He sells good stuff at a good price.

He has worked extensively with the .223 and has built projects that can shoot accurately for almost as far as you can see.

cheers

Yup I have been looking at his site :D:D:D.

Al tho it seems that he currently only has CHOATE stocks for the 700.

Also look at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply and North Shore Barrels, they both can get you most stocks. Your best bet is to look at the big manufacturers(Manners, McMillan, AICS, Bell and Carlson, etc.) and find out what you want and how much you want to spend and then get one of the dealers to order it in for you.

Bought one in .223 a couple years ago. Picked up an HS stock from a 700 LTR off the EE about a year ago and bedded the action into it. Running Leupold Mark 2 6-18X glass, and it has consistently shot .5-.6 MOA with 60g VMax handloads. Great varmint rifle. Also have a Savage 10PC in .308 which shoots about the same size groups. Kind of a toss-up between those, with maybe a slight nod to the Savage since it comes with a detachable mag from the factory whereas it is an expensive retrofit to the Remmy

Yep. Great little gun. I replaced the stock with one from an LTR. Bedding job is next. What powder/weight/brass/primer combo are you using with the 60gr Vmax's? I didn't get great groups with mine but this is while I had the Houge stock and substandard glass...

I bought one in 308. I had intended to use it as a starting point for a project. Took it out of the box, shot 20 factory rounds through it to break it in and then another 16 handloads. I discovered 1/4 " groups @ 100 yards when I went to check my targets. I was happy that I lucked out with such a good shooter, but it totally messed up my project! How do you improve on that? Decided not to mess with the 700, and buy an AR instead. Plenty of ways to waste money with an AR :)

R-P brass/CCI primers/25.0g Varget/10 thou off rifling. Brass was trimmed and pockets were uniformed the first time I loaded it, but now I just necksize. Don't care if I can wring another tenth out of it since the coyotes and groundhogs won't notice !!

i had a rem 223 vtr a while back loved the triangular barrel intergrated brake made it a little louder than normal other than that awesome gun overall

Reviving this old thread. Just picked up a R700 16.5" tactical in 223. does anyone have an pet loads for a first time relaoder for this? Also, does anyone know where to get a muzzle break/ comp for this or what the threads are on the barrel?

Try Sierra 69gr. Match Kings over Varget. Start at 24gr. and work up in .2gr, increments. Hodgon's data gives a max load of 46gr. The Remington 1:9 twists seem to really like the 69 SMK.

WHOA THERE!! You're going to have a hard time stuffing 46 gr of Varget into any .223 case. If you do get it in there......stand way far back.

I love mine. I put it in an HS precision takeoff I got off of the EE. It really limes 69gr match kings over 23.5gr of benchmark. That is the max load though, so if you try it start lower to make sure it's safe for your rifle.
