So I finally managed to get my hands on one and I love it. I got a great deal and took it home. Now I just need to get some scratch together for the scope. I'm looking at getting a leupold VX-1. I don't have a lot of cash to spend and I know the more you can spend on a scope the better. But the VX-1 seems to be my best choice.

However, I'm new to the long range rifle scene, so I wanted to get some opinions. The rifle is in 308 and I'm just gonna be doing target shooting. Hunting could be in my future, but not any time soon.

Thoughts?

I have the same rifle. I also did not want to spend a whole lot on a rifle/scope set up because I wasn't sure this was my type of shooting.
Although I don't use it a lot I'm glad it's in my cabinet.
I added a sling, Badger oversized bolt handle, burris bi-pod and a Falcon 4-14x44 EMD MOA($419.95) from Frontier. Not sure what your budget it for the scope but I'm very happy with the Falcon.

I think your best value for a scope would be the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40mm mildot. Should be good for punching paper at longer ranges with the turrets. Ive seen them used for $180, new is $230
 
I had to get rid of my Falcon scope, the eye relief was the s**ts and I was always getting bit, or scared to get bit, and this was affecting my shooting. I went to the Bushnell Tactical 4200 6-24x50 it is from there new re-designed tactical line, $800. IMO the best scope you can get for that kinda money. The glass is unreal, one piece body compared to Falcon, the eye relief is sick, and the new ones are all blacked out, no golden lettering or logos... Excellent Value for your money, plus you get back-up by Bushnell Canada...

Hi GD,

I had a .308 chambered SPS tactical recently, and not only was it a wonderful shooter, but a real pussycat to shoot in .308. This is the one I would recommend.

I have the same rifle too, with burris bi-pod and a Falcon 4-14x44 metric on TPS mount and rings. I could not have picked-up better for the price.
I am not a hardcore precision shooter and I hunt deer with this rifle, it is a tad heavy but not enough to bother me, and I know that I if I need the features of the falcon for long range precision (x14, 1 click = 1cm at 100m and ffp metric mildot) I have it.

I have the same type build I've been working on for some time, I started with the Bushnell 3200 10x and loved it but as I needed more magnification I moved up to the Falcon 4-14x44 and love it even more and kept it still under ten pounds. I still use the Bushnell on my M14 and for a shorter range rifle it is perfect, but with the Falcon I have shot at 500 yards with no problem. I will have a chance to try it at 1000 yards soon and expect the same result, only this time I have spent the money on a Bushnell Green Ring spotting scope to go along for the ride. I don't think the scope is the problem for getting bit, it took me many tries and upgrade$ to make my rifle properly customized for me and my shooting form and I haven't got there yet.

Yes it does only have 50 MOA of adjustment, so if you are planning on shooting to 1000yrds you will want a tappered scope base.

The previous owner of mine stated .4 and .5s "out of the box". I have since changed to a stiffer stock (HS precision) and had the trigger tuned and can now do a little better than that with 69 gr SMKs. This is with handloaded ammunition. The only off the shelf stuff I used was 62 gr American Eagle and 55 gr PVRI which would not group less than an inch at 100 yds.
 
I agree with elektrobug. If you are shooting out at long distances you need to factor in the MOA that you will need to adjust for on the scope. It is not always easy on the scopes to max them out. You might need to consider putting on a 20 MOA scope base to help if the scope has a low MOA adjustment.

I've got the 1" tube 6-24x40 4200 side-focus on my savage 223, which according to bushnell is supposed to have 40 MOA of adjustment, but in reality has only 32 MOA. Still, I make do by shimming with burris signature ring inserts, and I really enjoy the scope otherwise.
 
I also have the SPS Tactical in .223. It is shooting great with handloads (69gr SMK) but the 62 gr AE was terrible in it. I am using a Leupold 6.5-20 LR with Target turrets on a 20moa 1 piece rail and love it.

I swapped the flimsy Hogue for a bedded B&C Medalist A5 and there is a Jewel sitting on my workbench for it.

Out of the box my trigger was horrid. Several times I paused to check the safety after exhaling to the point of nearly passing out. I had the trigger tuned which was a night and day improvement but I am looking forward to getting the Jewel installed

Hey, can any of you guys with one of these do me a favour and take a few stock measurments? Specifically, I need the width of the forearm at it's widest point, and the depth from the centerline of the barrel to the underside of the forearm. These measurements should be right around the action screws infront of the trigger guard. In silhouette I'm limited to a maximum of 2 1/4" wide and 2 1/4" from the centerline of the bore to the underside of the fore-end, including screws.

Please? I'd really appreciate it. I'm thinking of picking one of these up as a starter rifle for my high power silhouette build, and I want to make sure the factory stock will meet the rules for hunter class.

+1 on the Falcon 4-14x44 EMD MOA. I've had mine for a while and love it. No problems with the eye relief but that's going to be up to you.

2" at the widest of the forearm and it is almost 2.25" to the top of the barrel from the bottom of the forearm so you are well within your limits
