Hi i am getting my firtst hunting rifle, i have my eyes on a remington 700 sps blued synthetic Detachable mag, in 30-06 cal, does anybody have experiece with these rifles, or would you suggest something better? my limit is about $600, Thanks!

For an extra 70 bucks would recommend a Tikka T3... Had both and the Tikka is a much nicer rifle. The SPS will have to be free floated and trigger will most likely have to be done, which makes it more expensive.

Will have to be??? Give me a break. I owned two. A 7mm-08 and a .270 Take it outta the box, sight in and kill things. The SPS does the job right outta the box. Looks way better than the Tikka as well. My 4 year old has water guns that look better than the Tikka.

...................Talk about feeding a newbie BS.

Sure, sure.... had 3 SPS, all had creepy triggers, bolts that felt like sandpaper and non that fed nearly as smooth as the Tikkas.... Non shot great until I sanded down the stock and free floated them, then they were quite accurate.

Never said it wouldn't kill things, but I haven't owned a Remington yet that didn't need work out of the box....

If I were looking for my first centerfire rifle today I'd skip the 700 and the Tikka...I'd get a Weatherby Vanguard....by far the most under rated, under appreciated rifle out there.......

Your right, they are excellent rifles. My only complaint was their triggers, but I put a Timney's in one of mine, but I liked them a lot better than the remingtons. I wouldn't mind picking up a deluxe, they have awesome wood stocks.

Then you are very unlucky.I have owned several that shot sub moa right out of the box.

either a busnell elite 3200 or a leopuld rifleman
Both in 3x9x40

I would definitely take the 3200 over a rifleman.

I have only had the SPS (3 of them), but I haven't tried any of the higher end models... but that is what he was asking about.

The stainless SPS had a smoother bolt than the blued version. I was a remington fan, until I bought and shot my first Tikka and that changed my mind. Nothing wrong the SPS, but I prefered the Vanguards and Tikkas I own over them and personally think they are better rifles after owning all three brands.

X2
I have a SPS and it shoots moa right out of the box, have no complains with it but the Vangaurd is a little nicer rifle for about the same price. The only reason I bought the SPS is it's a 300 ultra mag and it comes with a 26" barrel, the Vangaurds are only 24 with their Magnum choices.

Trigger does have creep . I can live with it but I will get a Timney soon

I am a happy Weatherby Vanguard owner.

In my opinion the best buy for your money right now when it comes to new rifles are the sps and the weatherby vangaurd. With the sps you have more options when it comes to upgrading if you so choose. The 700 action is easier to set up in the lathe if you ever want to rebarrel or blueprint the action. Also when it comes to aftermarket accessories, the sky is the limit with the sps. If you are a reloader, I would go with the floorplate rather than the detachable mag. You will have more flexibility with bullet seating and fine tuning loads. Both the Tika and Vanguard have 22" barrels where the sps comes with a 24" giving you a little more velocity and down range energy. If you are stepping up to the Tika price range you may as well get a Vanguard "sub moa" rifle with an accuracy guarantee.

The 700 does have a better trigger for a target or varmint rifle but the Vanguard trigger is easily reworked to 3# or thereabouts...the issue is that when you get the excessive sear engagement out of it the safety sometimes won't engage but that can be corrected with a bit of machining or grinding on the safety plunger or on the front face of the trigger.....I've decided that when I do another Vanguard trigger I'll just machine a new plunger...not a big deal....I'd still pick the Vanguard over the 700...IF I were looking for my first rifle.
