Is there any difference in the 700 SPS as far as the quality of the action and barrel are concerned when compared to the other 700's? I know the finish is cheap and the stock but that all would be changed anyways, its the action and barrel I am concerned about.

Any info guys?

Thanks,

should be the same. just lower quality finish and cheaper stocks

custom shop m700's on the other hand...

if you bought an SPS, pulled the barrel, had the action blueprinted and squared up, there is no reason why it cant be just as accurate as an action pulled off a donor BDL

I think the barrel might be the limiting factor. if you luck out, you could get a real good one. If I was gonna go to the trouble of removing the barrel to bluepint the action, I'd go ahead and get an aftermarket barrel installed.

as is, I think the factory SPS has the capability to shoot very well. especially when bedded in a good stock.

I would be putting a McMillian stock with Edge technology on it and was thinking of having the gun all Cerrakoted. Depending on how the barrel performed, just having the action blueprinted. Bolt work done to lighten it up. Williams bottom metal installed, trigger lightened up.

This would be a 25-06...sorry Tod they dont offer the 260.

Ya but then the price goes waaaaaaay up for the barrel...I am try to take a chance that I end up with a gun that will shoot good with the factory barrel.

by all means, take that chance :D dont let me stop you from getting a super accurate custom 260 barrel for under $450 ;)

I know you can get Bevan King barrels for under $500. For exact prices, I'm sure contacting GUNTECH on this forum would give you some answers.

as for the differences between the 260 and 7-08, they are slim. 260 enables you to use the great long range match bullets in the 140-142 gr. range. good varmint weights too in 85-100 grain. for hunting, there is many good bullets in the 120-160 grain weights

7-08 enables you to use slightly thicker, heavier bullets. it is a bit faster with equal weight bullets compared to the 260 as well. not alot of guys I hear of use heavier than 140 gr. in their 7-08s though, so I dont see the real advantage there.

I know alot of guys love their 7-08s, but I dont see what they do over the 6.5mm 260 :D

Rob- look at High Tech Specialties Stocks as well. I haven't seen any negative feedback so look into that one as well. You might want to consider ADL configuration to keep weight down...

I'd lean towards the 6.5 but the differences are probably academic.

I've had three different 700 SPS rifles and they all shot well under MOA with factory loads. Stock may look homely but they fit well for me and I think the matt finish on the barreled action is great. Don't know if its painted on or a black parkerizing but sure is tough.
Just my 2 cents worth!
Only problem I've had so far is finding a store with inventory, usually sell out fast @ $499.00

I bought an SPS in 300 Win Mag a couple weeks ago, to build a 416 Taylor. I'm pleased with the SPS action. It has real good lug contact, better than most 700's I've seen. The finish is not as rough as the early VS's. The bolt "feel" will smooth out with a bit of use. I pulled the unfired barrel out of mine and squared up the reciver face in the lathe. This is by far the straightest reciever face I've seen on a 700. It was only out .0007, that's seven tenths of a thou. I've seen 700's out up to .004". Looks like the new machinery in South Carolina is making a difference. I'm going to check the reciever bore to bolt clearance, it feels pretty tight. This one has a riveted extractor too. The days of trying to find cheap 700's for donors are over, for me anyway. When I can go to Wholesale Sports and walk out with a new 700, WITH a floorplate for $535, ($107 more for stainless) it's a good day. The stocks are miles ahead of the old ADL handle, stiffer and better looking(?). I'm probably going to pick up an SPS short action soon for a 257 Roberts rebarrel.

I changed my order at wholesale and am going with the stainless SPS in the 7mm-08...for the extra $100 I would rather have the stainless...besides is worked out better, they have 4 of these in stock so one is now on hold for me.
