I bought a remington 700 VLS and ran a peice of paper under the barrel and noticed it gets stuck. Is this model supposed to have a floating barrel? Also where the swivel stud is, above it on the inside of the stock it almost looks like theres a plate above it under the wood, anyone know if there is? If I want to float it, It looks like i'd have to do some sanding around that area, but if theres a little plate in there theres no point.

Free floating the barrel is not that hard to do but the biggest error done by a "do it yourselfer" is removing to much stock at the sides of the barrel and not enough underneath the barrel. Usually done by taking sandpaper and sanding away.

The action should be properly bedded as well..... and the trigger set up lighter.......and the scope mounted properly......and possibly recrowned as well.

I used to have this same rifle, no its not suppost to come from the factory with a floating barrel, and yes i had to sand it down to make it so. there is no plate that I found under the wood.

I have had a vls in .308 for 10 years now.It is the only rem hb that does not float the barrel. After cleaning and adjusting the trigger it shot groups of 5/8 inch at 100 yards.
Sure did annoy the epople that had theres blue printed.
