AS mentioned in a previous post (Stock and Scope Question_ I've never shot precision before and didn't know what to look for or buy.
I had my heart set on a Remington 700 PSP as a platform but couldn't find one to save my life. Then one day at a sporting goods shop in Calgary (names and places have been altered to protect the innocent) my Dirty Uncle Bob tells me that he's got just the rifle for me; a slightly and gently used Remington 700 VLS in 308.
I hum and haw as I had my heart set on something with a synthetic stock but at that point pretty much everyone in the store tells me I'd have to be $#%@$#%@# stoopid not to pick up that rifle. Total price came to $550 after I also picked up some Leupold 1" rings and base.
At this point I still needed a scope, wasn't sure what to pick up on a budget but I was pretty sure I couldn't afford what I really wanted which is a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T.
So with the idea that I would eventually get the scope that I really want I decided to go with the cheapest possible scope for now. I ended up getting the Tasco 2.5-10 x40 Varmint.
The scope looked reasonably clear, and I figured that if it crapped out I'd only be out $79CD. The guys at the store mounted and bore sighted the whole thing for me at no additional charge.
So he're my new rig:
I also picked up a few boxes of Winchester 308 FMJ Boat tail 150 GR and headed to the range.
Temperature was about 15C when I got to the range, no wind and no ideas what the humidity was. All shots were off the bench with a sandback underneath the front part of the stock. I was shooting at 100yds.
My first 25 shots were care free as I'm getting a feel for the rifle and figuring out how to look through a scope and hold a precision rifle (only ever shot an AR15 or an M1 with Iron Sights before). I'm also playing with my windage and elevation a bit but ended up only raising the elevation by two clicks and the windage by 1 click.
For the last 15 rounds I decide to get serious and really try before I headed home. The barrel was fairly warm at this point.
Here's the result:
The circled areas are my last three groups of five rounds each.
Group 1 Purple - Five rounds in 1" area (the X bull is the size of a loony)
Group 2 Red - Four rounds in 1" area plus one floater (not sure where it went)
Group 3 Yellow - Four rounds in 1" area plus one floater (marked)
I may not win any competitions with that shooting but that's the best shooting I've ever done with a new rifle....I went home with a big #### eating grin. I'm pretty sure that the rifle and scope can do better and the reason I'm only getting only 1 MOA is me and not the rifle.
I would feel fairly safe recommending this Scope and Rifle for anyone getting started in precision.
Cheers,
Happy
