Remington 700 VTR .223

Hi,

I am looking to buy a new gun to shoot targets at the range, not a huge fan of rimfires but ammo should not to be too expensive (I'm not reloading). Checking out some 223's right now and found an offer in a local gun-store of a Riemington 700 VTR in 223.

This gun was iunknown to me - and reading reviews is hit amd miss! Some guys love it as a very accurate rifle, others say they wished they had bought something else.........

Any input on this gun? Any experiences that coulkd help me to decide?
I know it's quite heavy for a 223, but I would just use it at the range.....

Thanks,

Jan

I have a VTR. Fun, ###y gun! I like it for hunting. I also have a savage Predator Max10 in 22-250 that I like more. They are both in the same price range. The VTR shoots real nice groups but the Savage shoots better! The Savage is probably heavier but if you are just range shooting it, it should not matter. I lug it all day long hunting with no problems. If I had to pick between the two, I would go with Savage but it would be a close call. They both shoot the Winchester white box .223 and 22-250 better than any other factory load that I have tried.

My Remington 700 VTR 243 Win shoots 1/2 - 3/4 MOA 5 shot groups at 200m with Hornady 95 SST factory ammo! My reloads are not much more accurate.
The muzzle brake is very effective but very loud for those standing to the sides.

The only downside is that after 2 years, I'm starting to find my rifle's triangular barrel very weird looking!

I have one as well. It's the Desert Recon. I really like the gun and it shot very accurately right out of the box. I wouldn't consider this gun heavy. The muzzle brake was a killer on the ears while hunting, so I had it removed for $75. Gunsmith said it was an easy job, as the crown is recessed and you wont affect the crown by cutting the brake off.
I recommend the gun.

I have a VTR in 223 and I have to say it's a rifle to avoid. Initially it was Desert Recon. From the box, it shot 3 or even 4 moa groups and I had to change the stock (Boyds, pillar and glass bedding), the trigger (jewell) and the firing pin (Tubb) to make it shoot under 1 moa. If you look for a no-problem gun you should better buy a Savage.

So - it's done.

Picked the Remington 700 VTR up yesterday, what a nice gun! Bought a Vortex 4 - 16 x 50 scope as well and mounted it with weaver tactical tings. Looks pretty damn good, now I will attach the bipod I have picked up today. Preparing it for the first day at the range next wek, can't wait!

Thanks for your thoughts, helps a lot to get comments from guys who know so much more about guns then I do.

Don't forget to take some photos of your rig and the end game targets and post up for us.

Ive heard mixed reviews as to how they shoot, but damn they look good!

Nice rig. A lot of the negative press comes from guys that never owend the rifle, the barrel was too different. Shooting the gun will tell you the whole story, The rem sps i had wouldn`t shoot factory ammo at all but was good with reloads, the nice thing about a 223 is the large variety of reasonably priced factory loads available. Hope it shoots well.

I have one in 223 and the noise isn't too bad shot alot of yotes this winter when I go shooting gophers or anything where multiple shots will be fired I stick in a pair of ear plugs as multiple shots can hurt one hear and there for yotes aint too bad and mine will shoot sub moa right out of the box took a few rounds to break in
