What is the difference???? Help me haha
also which is a better starting block for my long range target shooting weapon?
advantages and disadvantages to both? if any?
thanks guys

The sps tac is more compact, iirc. I've got one, and 1/2 moa isn't too difficult most days. The finish could have been better on the tac, but maybe the vtr's aren't any better. I also think the sps can be bought for less $$. Handle them both get the one you want. I don't remember if the vtr's have a bedding block in them, I don't think so. Rebarreling will be the same price down the road. Keep an eye on the exchange maybe for a pss, or vs with the bedding block precision stock.

The TAC has the Hogue overmoulded stock and a shorter barrel.

The thing machined on the end of the VTR barrel is not a true muzzle brake, its just for looks. Some people think it actually degrades accuracy. A local gunsmith told me of one guy who couldn't get his VTR to shoot acceptably well so he had the "muzzle brake" cut off and the barrel re-crowned and the accuracy improved.

I recently purchased a VTRin .308 and I kind of like it. I'm not sure why the muzzle break, I don't think it does much, the diameter of the bore through it is over sized and the barrel is crowned before the break. I was able to shoot one inch groups at a hundred yards with ammo I had developed for another rifle and expect this to improve as I develope ammo for it.

I don't think that the action has a cheap feeling, I found it to be the same as any other model 700.

Everyone here has their preferences, pick the one you like and have fun.

VTR's have a very cheap feeling action when you cycle the bolt. The SPS feels smoother for some reason.

Iam pretty sure its the exact same action

I have a VTR in 308 and an SPS Tac in 223. I Think the brake on the VTR helps, It doesnt have anywhere near the recoil of other .308's and the triangle barrel is supposed to dissipate heat 20% faster I believe. And the thing is an absolute tac driver, So is the .223 but I get more people asking me about the VTR on and off the range

And one thing I'v noticed about the SPS Tac stock, If you plan to do any hunting with it the rubber collects dust like a swiffer

Craig, it felt... 'plasticky' when the bolt was being moved back from the follower. And it also felt less than positive when feeding rounds into the mag compared to the SPS. Maybe I just had a poorly assembled gun?

Perhaps, I know the fit and finish is the same on my tac as well as vtr, The Tac is still brand new and needs a little smoothing out but the vtr could have came the same way, I dont remember

Depends if you're looking for a 1000 yard F-Class/TR rifle or not!
If you're shooting F-Class get the 26" SPS Varmint,
If not get the better handling 22" VTR

I have a 243 Win VTR and love the rifle:
1) accurate 1" 5 shoot groups at 200 yards with Hornady 95gr SST ammo,
2) very little recoil and no muzzle jump,
3) and superb handling.

There is 2 downsides:
1) barrel is really only 20" compared to 26" of SPS Varmint,
2) SPS Varmint is supposed to be more accurate, but my rifle shoots so well that I'm not sure about this, at least for 243 Win 100gr combo.

In 243 Win you lose 30fps per inch for a 100gr at 3000fps so lose 180fps.
In 308 Win you lose 20fps per inch for a 150gr at 2800fps so lose 120fps.

This is only really important if you want to shoot F-Class at 1000yards where 120fps difference = 6 inch of drift for a 10mph side wind at 1000yards.
This means that a 308 will drift 6 inches more and a 243 will drift 9 inches more.

Finally, I'm looking for a 308 F-Class/TR rifle and will certainly buy a 26" SPS Varmint not a 22" (20" effective) VTR.

Oups, I forgot something important: the stocks on VTR and SPS are inexpensive plastic model and the bolt handle is simple knurled type.
You might want to consider a 700P to get a tactical bolt handle (worth something like 200$) and better stock.

My choice was to get the VTR and then spend 1200$ to buy an AICS stage 2.0 stock. The result works fantastically well but I'm still stuck with the knurled bold hand ;)
