Hey everyone,

I was looking at getting a new rifle here next month and wanted some insight on which one is the better one to get. I was looking at both of these rifles in .308. I like the looks of the VTR better but that only gets you so far. Both have pretty good reviews and the difference in price is only about $150. Both are pretty similar in accuracy and weight it seems. I am doing mostly range shooting and want to get the best rifle for some distance shooting. Anyone have any thoughts?

Also going to need a good scope too. Anyone got any ideas?

get the sps and purchase an hs precision take off stock. there is one in the ee right now for 275. get the trigger adjusted to your liking. scope i would go with is the bushnell 4200 tactical, there was recently a new one for sale in the ee for 625. i would stay away from the vtr, read the review on sniper central.

SPS has longer barrell than VTR = better accuracy

Scope = Bushnell 4200 6-24 X 50

Gr8 advice from the above poster folks. I made the same decision (your are faced with) and I chose the SPS Tactical. I bought mine from Epps (board sponsor). I particularly liked the .223 version since the barrel is a 1 in 9" twist to launch the longer 75 grain Hornady Amax bullets. :evil:

I ended up selling the Hogue Overmolded rubber stock on the EE forum for a decent price and then bought an HS Precision stock; you guessed it; on the EE forum right here. CGNutters are a helpful bunch! ;)

Hope this helps you fuel the addiction! :D

Cheers,
Barney

You mean better VELOCITY.

Accuracy has nothing to do with the length of the barrel unless you are using iron sights.

OP;
Buy the cheaper one, you won't be happy with the stock anyway, so buy the cheaper one and then use the $$ you saved to buy what you really want.

If you really get into this you will then be putting a barrel on it, getting a bunch of accurizing done to the action etc. So in the end all that will be left of your original purchase will be the action (which is the same on both guns).

IF you realize this is not your cup of tea you will be out less $$ as you spent less in the first place.

My $.02

Buy the SPS and change the stock like said before.

As for the scope I would always buy something good right off the start that way you don't have to upgrade.

Nightforce or Leupold MK4 if you got the cash.

So many times you see people at the range with a nice rifle that has junk glass on it. When I buy a new rifle it's not the price of the gun that drops my bank it's the scope.

The SPS V is a much better choice, its cheaper and with the cash you save you could easily get an HS precision stock. After you drop it in an HS stock you then have a rifle that's almost the same as the 700P.

I personally have an SPS Tactical with the 20" barrel and picked up an HS stock from the EE (just waiting for it to show up) The stock is usually the short coming on most factory rifles.

You can get the SPS V then drop it in the HS stock and be well under the price of a 700P and have a similar rifle.
