I'm posting this here as the scope choice leads me to believe that the intent of the previous owner was to use it asa a target/precision rifle.

I picked this up as part of trade. Remington 700 action in .308? Maybe?

The scope choice is questionable.

The stock feels almost home made.

The barrel is octagonal in shape.

What do I have? A Frankenstein firearm? Lol

Thanks in advance....

What's the bolt face look like? The locking lugs? The extraction cam area on the action and the bolt?

How does it shoot?

No idea - not.brave enough to try it out yet....at least not until I learn more about it haha.

Forgot to mention - it's a single shot.

Thankfully as traded, it had a zero $ value attached to it. :)

The action is A one of the first rem actions...And one of the best.
Bolt face is perfect,I dont think its shot a whole lot.
Could be a a rebarreled VTR???

Looks like a gem of an action to use.

Check the bore diameter
Put an empty case - 243/308 and see if it goes in or sticks way out.

Octagonal barrel may be aftermarket... the machining alone is pricey. Can't tell if the muzzle is threaded?

Look down the bore after running a few clean dry patches... just off a light source and does the bore shine?

A drop of cold blue on the barrel steel - where it could be covered by the stock. does it stain?

Wood stock or composite?

What trigger is on the action?

Barrels are a consumable item on a rifle. I have seen some really ugly stocks that work well for their intended purpose. BR stocks are different than F-Class stocks, both are different than prone stocks or a hunting stock. Some people try to modify one stock to suit a different game. The only really important part of the stock is the bedding area and where you hold the rifle (including cheek weld) , or how it sits on a rest. Everything else on the stock is cosmetic.

Bore is nice and shiney.

.bolt wont close with a .308 case chambered.

Stock is wood and the bore is in fact nice and shiney.

Muzzle isnt threaded.

No idea about the trigger as I havent paid.tol much attention to it. I will break it down over.the next couple of days to find out more.

Appreciate the info everyone!

confirm bore size... then see if a Creedmoor case will chamber.. if that will not, grab a 6BR case and see if that chambers. Be easier if the guy you got it from would just tell you what the chamber is. I suspect you are looking at the beginnings of a range rifle project in a smaller cartridge.

But use gauges to confirm what you have.

Put up a pic of the trigger when you can.

Well it is worth something for sure... it just isn't a finished project yet. You can probably part it out and make more than 'as it sits'. The barrel needs draw filing and flat polishing and crowning... as Jerry says - post a picture of the trigger and test it... is it really light?

OP,
Cast the chamber w/ cerosaf instead of attempting to JAM any other pieces of brass in the chamber as previously recommended.
Is the Bbl steel tempered as in the 40's RC scale,if not-
Spin the Bbl off the action & use it for a jack handle.

The "A" pre-fix serial numbered receiver is of 1973 vintage w/ the predecessor 4,5,6&7 digit serial numbered receivers dating from 1962 to your A pre-fix.

Your "A" prefix serial numbered receiver has a single shot follower glued in the receiver under the bolt rails.

Yep, a nice oldie of set up. The man you want to talk to is Guntech to see how well these triggers can function... and they do.

figure out the chamber if not marked.... change out the firing pin spring as I assume it is likely original... seat a quality bullet 10 thou off the lands and go enjoy it.

If cosmetics determine how a rifle functions, than a shot of bead blast and a coat of cerakote will make it all better.

You may have a gem on your hands...

all the best

Jerry
