What are the downsides using a Rem 700 SPS DM as a base for custom build

Use an HS , custom barrel, true action etc, but I would like the option of a detachable mag . Is there another basic Remington to choose from and/or using aftermarket lower metal ?

thanks

If your desire is to incrementally add to a rifle in order to spread costs out over a long period of time, there really aren't any down-sides.

HOWEVER, as much as I am a huge fan of the Reminton 700 action, you really reach a point of diminishing return when it comes to working with a Remington for a build.

The cost of truing an action and adding a good trigger on top of the action puts you so darned close to the cost of a full-on custom action, that it almost makes more sense to use a custom to begin with.

A Barnard Repeater and a top-of-the-line Roberston Custom Stock will run you roughly $2400. There are also Stillers, Pierce, Surgeon and PGW as well.

I would really look at the economics of it all.

What you propose will result in a fantastic firearm, and done right, it would be wickedly accurate, but there are other ways to skin the cat that may be easier, same cost, and worth more at the end of it all.

:agree:

The main advantage tuning a rem700 is that if you are poor, you can add the parts one by one thus spread the cost over months/ years with a rifle in hand. Instead of saving for months/years to THEN have a rifle in hand
Just my personnal experience

F class shooters who have knowledge of this ... How does the 700 DM system stand up with lots of use? I have seen a few fail in hunting rifles...

If you switch later from a factory DM action will after market bottom metal work okay in the DM action?

I am assuming the bottom of the stock would look ugly with the alteration needed for the 700 DM.

F-Class gurus all use followers in their rifles to make them single shot. Magazines - while allowed to exist - are not allowed to be used in F-Class.

Or, they use XP and XR actions like me :D

Are mags allowed in F/O class ...... if not then you would have to exchange the lower metal to a follower system , is that right ? Hmmm, i always lose.
So , what class allows mags.

Does musgrave make repeaters ? anyone else in that price league offer repeaters. I assume that the trueing is already done with these custom jobs .

thanks

I think you can have a mag attached to a F Class rifle but you must load single rounds only. Precision matches allow you to use a mag.
The only Musgraves I have seen (mine included) are single shot solid flat bottomed actions.
