Remington 700VLS or Savage 12BVSS?

Savage.

The 700's have long had a rep for out-of-the-box accuracy, but the newer models seem to be a bit more hit-and-miss. Savage model 12 is the new kid on the block, and rapidly making a name for itself, but the remington camp is still a lot more entrenched. Because the 700 has been out for ever, there's a lot of aftermarket goodies for it, and fewer for the Savage. The exception that the Savage & its barrel nut is MUCH easier to swap barrels on - a plus in my book. If you plan on spending mucho dinero on upgrades, the remington is probably the better rifle. But for from-the-box accuracy and bang-for-the-buck, remington's got nothing on Savage.

And the AccuTrigger. Absolutely stellar. I have both a 12BVSS and a Remington XR-100 with the 40X trigger and I much prefer the Savage's. And for those who dislike the blade, take it off. It's super easy to do.

Opinions of Savage & Remington

I cannot feel comfortable telling what bangstick people should buy, except for the Norinco M14. (Remember: Don't get ONE, buy TWO of them) Sorry, I could not resist that plug.

At our Precision Rifle matches, I get to see 'em all. I have been shooting these games for many years now and I have come to respect all the platforms that compete on a consistent basis. ;)

Lots and lots of Savage , Remington and Winchester rifles are always on the firing line. I'm impressed to see all of these brands out there at our matches.

Get what works for YOU (not any other CGNutters) and your budget and YOUR game ! All mass produced machinery are going to have some QC issues, get over it.... Over the years, I have observed many of these QC issues resolved and then tweaked to shoot into 1/2"... some of the rifles need a little more tweaking, but hey, that's the experience that we (wiser) CGNutz veterans pass on.

Find what works for you... and don't forget to factor in some LCY (look cool value).

Cheers,
Barney
