I recall at some point glazing past an idea that someone had...disabling the gas system of the 742 so that it essentially turns into a straight-pull bolt 30.06. Has anyone done this or does anyone have any idea as to how this would be done? thanks for your insight,

-Matt

well, you could weld up the gas ports on the barrel, that should stop it from functioning.:)

Also, you'd want a bit longer bolt handle, for pulling in wet weather.

Interesting idea. With welding up the gas port, you would have to leave the tip on the gas block to aid in the guide of the weight under the forend. Without sweating off the gas block itself, welding the hole in the barrel, then re-silver soldering the gas block back on, I am at a loss as to how to plug the barrel. Kind of tough to weld inside that little hole under the ball bearing.
If you had the right parts, you could turn your rifle into a pump. I've used a 742 barrel to re-barrel a 760.
